Greetings!
As we reflect on 2010, the YMCA of Central New Mexico has been very blessed. The Y has been able to impact the lives of thousands of children, families, and adults through our many programs and facilities. I would like to share a few of those programs.
- A group of volunteers went to Camp Shaver and completely re-modeled the kitchen. The floor in the kitchen was in dire need of replacement. This group of volunteers purchased the wood to replace the floor, moved all of the kitchen equipment, installed the new floor, installed new cabinets, and put the kitchen equipment back in time for summer camp to begin. This same group of volunteers has since "adopted" Camp and will now identify other projects that Camp needs work and will be fundraising for Camp too.
- Pajarito Elementary School sports program: The Y was able to provide two season's of youth sports to the students at Pajarito Elementary School. In the Spring, 125 students played in the Jr. Thunderbirds basketball league and this Fall, 200 students played soccer. The students received a 100% scholarship because of the donation from Y supporter, Bob Scanlon.
- Summer Day Camp: The third week of Day Camp was a special one for many reasons. It was the first time the Y had partnered with a local group that assists children with severe asthma and supporting their families in our Day Camp program. The third week also coincided with U.S. Olympic Week in the US. The Y was blessed to hear an inspirational talk given by Dana Hee, the 1988 Olympic Gold medalist in Taekwondo, who is from Albuquerque, and is an asthmatic too. Dana spoke to 160 Day Campers and staff about how she was able to overcome her asthma to become an Olympic champion.
- The Y continued our partnership with the APS Title I program, providing complimentary Y memberships to homeless high school students.
- The Y celebrated the 50th anniversary of our Youth and Government program. This program provides high school students throughout the state the opportunity to learn how government works. Over 150 students participated in the program this year. Each April, the students "takeover" the Roundhouse and learn how to write laws, pass laws, and argue court cases in the Supreme Court Chamber.
- Camp Shaver celebrated its 65th year.
- The launch of the new brand including a new Y logo and our three new causes: Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility.
- The Y's annual support campaign, the Step Up For Kids Campaign raised $250,000 for scholarships. This is the most funds raised by Y volunteers in a annual support campaign in the 95 year history of the YMCA of Central New Mexico. For every $1 raised, $.983 will be made available for scholarships.
Without the support of our members, volunteers, community, and dedicated staff, the Y would not be able to provide the programs and activities that improve the quality of life for our community.
Thank you for supporting the YMCA of Central New Mexico. Happy Holiday's and Happy New Year!

Membership
Membership Drive
Save $50
Like so many other members of our community, we often feel stressed and powerless in these economic times. More than ever we need to focus on the important areas of our lives that make a positive difference. Daily exercise, bonding with family and community support helps make individuals and families more resilient. At the Y, we are motivated to make this happen daily.
This November, we enjoyed some tasty dishes for our membership appreciation Thanksgiving potluck, our Silver Sneakers had a blast at their Christmas party and in December we shared our favorite recipes during our annual Cookie Exchange. We value our members and would like to thank you all for a great year.
Join us as part of your New Year's Resolution solution - Work out, relieve stress and have fun with family and make new friends. We invite you to tell others of the $50 savings during our Membership Drive - We are waiving the $50 joining fee. |

For Healthy Living
Healthy Resolutions
As 2011 rolls around so does our desire to set a New Years Resolution. Resolutions should be reasonably attainable so you are setting yourself up for success. Set smaller intermediate goals which will lead to one primary resolution.
Take Small Steps: Rather than "I will exercise every day," try "I will walk at lunch on Tuesday/Thursday and work out at the Y on Monday/Friday." Accomplishing smaller goals will leave you with a feeling of success further inspiring you.
Change for You: Resolutions should come from a desire to change for yourself.
Be Creative: Try walking to complete an errand. Spend time with the kids by skipping rope. Meet new friends in a group exercise class.
Be Realistic: Be sure your plan of action is real.
Anticipate Roadblocks: Knowing an event is coming and planning for it keeps you on track whether it is a vacation or a potluck.
Reward Yourself for Successes: Try to find a new way to reward yourself when you meet one of your smaller goals. Build a Support System: Friends, family, an instructor or a Personal Trainer are all people who can encourage and support you but remember you are your best supporter. Happy New Year!

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE TIPS
Getting Ready to Hit the Slopes
Skiing is an activity that involves a variety of elements: strength, endurance, balance and coordination. A training program to develop skills used for skiing will take you to new heights and possibly prevent you from getting hurt.
The best way to develop a sport-specific program is to add to your existing program. Here are a few exercises to add before you head out to the slopes.
· Wall Sits-for isometric strength
· Squats and lunges-for lower body strength
· Abdominals-for a solid "core"
· Plyometric movements like hopping side to side for muscular strength, power and agility.
· One legged squats for strength and balance.
· Jump ups on a bench step for power.
· Double ball bounce for improving reaction time. |

For Youth Development
Youth Sports
The YMCA and the New Mexico Thunderbirds are gearing up for the 2nd Annual Kick Off Jamboree to celebrate the start of our 2011 Jr. Thunderbird League. The Kick off Jamboree will be on Sunday, January 9th, 2011 from 1:00PM to 6:30PM. All players, coaches and parents are invited to attend. Team jerseys will be available for pick up and team pictures will be taken at the event. The Jamboree will include a player's clinic for all current participants hosted by the YMCA. The player's clinic will teach the basic fundamentals of basketball. Current participants will also be given the opportunity to receive autographs from the players of The New Mexico Thunderbirds. We are very excited about the partnership and all of the benefits it will bring to our community.
NEW: Coming in the summer of 2011 we will be taking registration for Youth Sports Online. With the new online registration members will be able to register for any youth sports program, itty bitty sports and specialty camps. We are very excited about the change and hope that the change will help better serve our members.
Summer Camp
Parents and educators in many cases express concerns for learning loss over the summer break. One concern is that children learn best when instruction is continuous. Research has proven that in many cases the long summer vacation stops the flow of academic advancement. Sometimes students will lose the important skills they have learned during the school year and may forget valuable knowledge in regards to reading comprehension, language and math skills during the summer months. Therefore, it is never too early to consider where your child will spend the summer months. There are approximately 150 days till summer break! Registration will open on Monday, March 7th, please check the Y website early February for important registration information: forms, locations, camp dates, and offerings.
The Y has teamed up with several partners to insure children who participate in traditional, specialty, teen day, and counselor in training camps learning is extended through fun educational activities. Junior Achievement, Intel Teach, Albuquerque Public Schools, Empower Me 4Life, City of Albuquerque Libraries, and the Y of the USA have provided curriculums that will fill our summer camp with many challenging, yet fun learning experiences for children and families. Y Day Campers will also learn core values, conflict resolution and leadership skills, while making new friends, building self-confidence, appreciating teamwork and growing in self-reliance. For children and families, Y camp is a fun and happy place to enjoy the summer play games, create arts and crafts, explore science and technology, swim, participate in field trips, appreciate nature and discover and value our many cultures.
Come and join in on all the fun! |

For Social Responsibility
We say it all the time, the Y is a lot more than a fitness center, much more than a basketball game or a swimming pool with water aerobics. At times, who we are is so complex, we struggle to explain all we do in our communities. For those that have been impacted by the Y it is sometimes easier to define.
Lives have become healthier in our fitness centers, lives have been saved by taking swimming lessons, and families have been strengthened because we love and keep their children safe. Social responsibility is a verb, an action statement, it's something the Y feels not only helps others, but helps ourselves. When we discuss our new logo and tagline: for youth development, for healthy living, and social responsibility, we know that all three are a commitment to evolving as a human being. We know that being healthy and happy sometimes means seeing the world outside ourselves and reaching out and creating the world we want to see.
The Y is blessed to be rich with stories of compassion for our neighbors and life altering programming that touches thousands of people a year. Please join us in celebrating these Y stories on our blog: Learn. Evolve. Empower at YMCACNM.org. You'll learn about the great folks in our Y's that are giving their time to help others meet their goals and learn to love themselves. You'll meet people who have lost hundreds of pounds, volunteers who teach kids how to read, and people of all ages making sure that folks in need get turkey dinners and holiday gifts.
If you want to do the same, get in the game of social responsibility. As the saying goes..."To much has been given..." we all feel the need to make sure we are being the best human beings we can be. Check out the Y, we're in thousands of cities and countries because our founders believed in social responsibility. We are dedicated to continuing this rich legacy. In 2011, our calendar is full of great events that enhance our community. All we need is you.
