Energizer & Giant Eagle Volunteer With Habitat
Bunnies, Paint, and So Much More!
On June 8th, over 40 volunteers traveled from all over the country as part of Energizer's series of projects with Habitat for Humanity. This project in Swissvale marked the 8th project of the series. The company also partners with Giant Eagle allowing some employees to also serve with Energizer and Habitat for Humanity.

The crew spent the day repainting an entire 2-story house! It is a prime example of our "A Brush With Kindness" program. In addition, HFHGP staff painted the homeowner's foundation and replaced her front door awning.

HFHGP would like to give our sincere thanks to Energizer and Giant Eagle for their time, dedication to Habitat for Humanity and their financial support! We look forward to hosting such an "energized" crew again!

Partner Family Spotlight!

Every now and then we at Habitat would like to take a moment and feature our newest families that have partnered with us. We take pride in our families and want to share their amazing stories with our supporters. We hope you find inspiration from these wonderful families and hope to see you out on the build site or the ReStore with them!

Beuline Ndikumana and Issa Ntamagendero

Habitat is proud to announce the selection of the Ndikumana/Ntamagendero family as our newest Program Family.

Beuline and Issa immigrated to America in 2008 from a refugee camp in Tanzania. Originally from Burundi, the father and mother were displaced by Civil War in 1972, forcing them into the refugee camp where their five children were born.

While life has improved for the family since coming to America, challenges remain. The family lives in overcrowded public housing located within a neighborhood known for acts of violence. Although both parents work, language and cultural barriers limit their access to well paying living-wage jobs. In spite of these challenges, Beuline and Issa have committed themselves to creating a better life for their family. A cornerstone of their goal is to achieve homeownership. Over the next 6-12 months, the family will partner with Habitat to renovate a three-story home in the neighborhood of Sharpsburg, contributing over 350 hours of "Sweat Equity." By partnering with Habitat, Beuline and Issa have begun the journey toward owning a home that can be passed down to their children and the generations to come.

Jay Schaffer

Jay Schaffer was selected as Habitat's first A Brush with Kindness project. A senior living in the neighborhood of Turtle Creek, Jay has always been handy and independent. With his house set halfway down a hill, years ago he built the flight of wooden stairs leading down to his front door. Over the years the steps have held up well, but as Jay's needs changed, additional safety modifications were needed. Unfortunately, the length of the steps made the cost of renovations nearly impossible on a fixed-income.

Working with Habitat, Jay was able to renovate the front steps of his home. Solar lighting was added as a green way of illuminating the stairs at night. Additional handrails were installed to ensure that Jay could get up and down safely, particularly in poor weather. Through these minor but important modifications, Habitat was able to ensure that Jay's home remained accessible to him.

Raymond Boea

An avid weight lifter for years, Raymond suffered a debilitating stroke in 2006, leaving him partly paralyzed on one side. Since then, Raymond has worked tirelessly toward regaining his full independence. In addition to regular physical therapy, Raymond decided to take steps to ensure that his home remains well-maintained and accessible. By partnering with Habitat through A Brush with Kindness, Raymond's home will be outfitted with durable siding, soffit and fascia. Once installed, the majority of his home's exterior will be maintenance-free for decades. His front steps and fence gates will be repaired as well, to ease access to the front and rear of his home. Once completed Raymond and Habitat will have taken a big step toward securing the safety, accessibility and longevity of his home.

Fashion Show Raises Over $8,000 For Veterans!

On June 7th, HFHGP and the Art Institute of Pittsburgh co-hosted the premier Hard Hats & High Heels Fashion Show at Soldiers and Sailors in Oakland. Altogether, the show raised $8,012 for Habitat's new Veterans' Housing Initiative, conceptualized and developed by AmeriCorps Community Outreach Coordinator Jeremy Martin.

In his role as an AmeriCorps volunteer, Jeremy started this first of its kind Veterans' program in Allegheny County to provide homeownership, volunteer opportunities, home repair, and weatherization without any limits based on discharge, disability, or age [to Veterans]".

All proceeds from the fashion show directly support the Veteran Housing Initiative at HFHGP and will cover costs associated with home repairs for Veterans in our community. Thank you to the 250+ supporters at the event!  Habitat thanks the many sponsors and supporters that helped to make the show possible including Macy's, Comcast, Riverside Design Group, Trend's Capital, and the Art Institute of Pittsburgh's Fashion Production classes.  We are especially grateful to those who donated the silent auction items.

*******************************

In 2012, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Pittsburgh looks forward

to the development of four key components of our expanded mission to serve local communities:

NEW CONSTRUCTION - one of the core components of our program, we will continue to build new homes when and where appropriate and we will build those homes to green standards.  New homes take up to one year to plan and build with volunteers.

REHAB - Habitat has consistently worked to rehabilitate homes for new program families.  The difference in our new mission is that we will not only rehab home for new homeowners, but we will enable current local homeowners the opportunity to remain in their homes by doing critical repairs (such as roof replacement) at an affordable cost with volunteer labor.  Working through bank programs, we can obtain homes that might need minimum upgrade for a new program participant.  These homes can be ready for occupancy within several months.

WEATHERIZATION - expanding the number of clients we can serve in a community,  our new weatherization program will cover a wide range of funding levels and demonstrate energy conservation for homeowners. Weatherization homes are also very volunteer friendly and cost effective.

A BRUSH WITH KINDNESS -  A new program that includes minor repairs to the exteriors of current homeowners.  Activities include painting, landscaping, handicap ramp repair, and other volunteer-friendly activities.

These four construction-based activities will enable Habitat for Humanity the ability to serve more families, impact a broader range of communities, engage additional volunteers, and have a positive overall impact on the Greater Pittsburgh area.
