About His Work with Janet   August/Sept 2012

Many of you have read Praying For Your Prodigal Daughter: Hope, Help & Encouragement for Hurting Parents in which my daughter, Kim Mancini, and I share the story of her prodigal journey and my praying God's will for her for many years before she accepted Jesus as her Savior. Our God is a God of miracles and He always answers prayer...in His way and in His timing!

Last weekend, Kim shared the podium with me at Twin Falls Reformed Church Women's Retreat at the Sun Valley Resort. As I watched Kim articulately sharing her life journey, my heart swelled with a mother's pride and gratitude. This too was a prayer that has been on my heart for many years...that Kim would come to a place in her spiritual maturity where she would want to speak with me. And there she was doing just that!

My message to anyone praying for a miracle or praying for someone to come to the Lord: Don't give up. Keep praying! And learn to pray Scripture back to God. In the appendix of Praying for Your Prodigal Daughter, I include "40 Days of Praying Scripture for Your Daughter." I'm often asked by parents how I knew the Scriptures I selected were just what they needed to pray. I reply that these were some that spoke to me, but if you start praying Scriptures from the Bible, soon they will all apply to your life too. Everything I discuss in the book also applies to sons.

Try personalizing Romans 12:1-2 The Message with me by filling in the blank with someone you're praying for, or even yourself. I pray this for Kim even now:

God please help ____________ take her everyday, ordinary life-her sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life-and place it before You, God, as an offering. Embracing what You, God, do for ____________ is the best thing she can do for You and us. Don't let ____________ become so well-adjusted to the culture that she fits into it without even thinking. Instead, fix her attention on You, God. She'll be changed from the inside out. She will readily recognize what You want from her, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around her, always dragging her down to its level of immaturity, God, You, bring the best out of her. Develop well-formed maturity in ____________. (Romans 12:1-3 MSG) Amen.

FEATURED WOMAN TO WOMAN MENTORING MINISTRY TESTIMONY

MENTORING IN TEXAS...

Hello Janet,

I contacted you a few months ago re: mentoring at my church, First Baptist, in Kaufman, Texas.  My pastor had recommended I get in touch with you.

I appreciated hearing back from you and your encouraging words.  Funny thing is, I only contacted my Pastor re: any help he could send my way on how to mentor one of the younger women at my church.  Next thing I know, he has ordered one of your kits on how to start a mentoring ministry, and asked me to go through it and give him my recommendation.

I now find myself in the strangest place - I have read all of the material, listened to your testimony, watched all segments on the DVD, and reviewed all of the forms.  Every time you said you had no intention of starting a women's ministry, I was right there with you, thinking, "I totally agree, sister, and am so glad God gave you that push, and not me!"

I took a mental health day and a media fast on Saturday, and also treated myself to time alone in the Scripture.  Reason being, is because it seems like God is directing me to start a Mentoring Ministry at my church, and not just work with one person.  I really just wanted some time to be quiet and listen.

As ideas came to mind, I found myself repeating some of your lines!

"Lord, I don't really know a lot of people at this church."  My next thought was, "Yes, Janet said the same thing."

"Lord, I don't really want to work with a women's ministry!"  Well, you get the picture!

Yet, I have been praying about where exactly I fit at this church, and what God wanted me to be planning for when I retire in a few years.  Mission trips for sure, but a Mentoring Ministry, too?  Are you kidding?

God opened the doors for me to move to the country about 4 years ago when my youngest child went off to college, but I continued driving 40 miles to my church.  I just moved my membership to my new home community earlier this year - I love it, I know God called me to this fellowship, and now, I think I'm beginning to understand why.

I'm totally thrilled, awed, and humbled, not to mention completely overwhelmed, scared, and definitely depending on my Jehovah Jireh for His strength, provision, energy, and direction.  Your "kit" is everything I could possibly need, and as a fellow-trainer and speaker, I so appreciate the fact that absolutely nothing is left to chance.

I look forward to getting to know you and hope to meet you sometime soon!

I'm going to meet with the Pastor and Associate Pastor later this week, and lay it all out for them with regard to starting this ministry.  I want to ensure I have their backing, and that they understand this is a commitment, not a 1-time event.

Thanks for listening!  I'll be in touch!

Joyfully,

Linda Stevens

PS: Linda's supportive pastor is sending her and four team members to YOU LEAD in Long Beach, CA this month. I can't wait to meet them.

   "GRAMMIE'S CORNER"
  Josh and Jordan

When we received this picture of our two Orange County grankids, the first thing Grampa said was "Glad they have their helmets on". This is Josh and little sister Jordan, who as you can see wants to be just like big brother and do whatever he does.

That's why as they grow older it will be so important for Josh to be a good role model for Jordan. As parents and grandparents that's often a hard concept to convey to older siblings, but it's an important lesson to teach them at an early age.

Can't wait to see these precious ones in October!

PRAYING FOR YOUR PRODIGAL DAUGHTER

PrayingA PRAYING MOTHER SHARES...

Janet,

In the process of our adoptive daughter running from our home 2 years ago, I ordered 5 books on prodigals that I randomly selected from the CBD website. Yours was one of the books. It was the one that helped me the most as a mother and helped to give me a glimmer of hope, where before I wasn't sure one existed.

The truths in the book spoke loudly to me in my grief. I felt someone understood what my husband and I were going through. It felt as though the Holy Spirit was reaching from the pages and telling me to look up to receive the comfort that I so desperately needed. The book helped give focus to my prayers.

After a long 9 months, God miraculously worked to bring our daughter home. She will turn 21 in 2 months, is working, in school and is the mom to our first precious 1 year old grandson. Thanks for writing this book and sharing your struggles to help others. God Bless your ministry,

Lou Ann

Congratulations Joanne Bischof on your debut novel, Be Still My Soul

I met Joanne Bischof at a booksigning in Idyllwild, CA. She is a gifted writer and the mother of three young children. I am in awe of young author mothers who fit writing into their schedule and busy lives. I'm a hermit writer.

What was the inspiration behind Be Still My Soul?

As the idea for Be Still My Soul took seed, it unfolded to be a love story between two mismatched people-a marriage between a shy, innocent girl with a strong faith, and a cocky, confident bluegrass musician who hasn't given God much thought. By throwing them together in a shotgun wedding, I wondered how their story would unfold. Could true love rise from the ashes of broken hopes? This was the question I asked myself as Lonnie and Gideon's journey began.

How do you choose your character's names?

For historical fiction, I always strive to find a name that would have been around in a particular time or place. For this series, I took it one step further and researched names specific to the Appalachian region. It was tons of fun reading through records of names like Erwin and Floyd. When I stumbled upon the name, Lonnie, I knew it was the perfect name for my heroine.

What would you like your readers to take away after reading Be Still My Soul?

When faced with a difficult situation God is always ready and waiting to be our strength. I hope that readers will take away a peace that God works in all situations. The scripture I've based the series around is 1 Peter 5:10, and I chose it because it's a great reminder that we are never alone on this journey called life. Through the ups and downs, God is there and His mighty plan is at hand.

But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. (1 Peter 5:10)
