AHW MINISTRIES NEWSLETTER

About His Work with Janet   July 2012

SHINE ON!

In July, I enjoyed a wonderful trip to Orlando, Florida to attend the Advanced Writers and Speakers Association's (AWSA) annual conference prior to the International Christian Retail Show (ICRS), where I signed Face-to-Face with Lois and Eunice and Face-to-Face with Sarah, Rachel, and Hannah. I was thrilled that Dear God, Why Can't I Have a Baby? was a finalist for AWSA's Golden Scrolls Nonfiction Book of the Year Award. What an honor to receive this recognition from my peers.

One of my fellow authors, Janet McHenry, summarized the theme of the speakers at AWSA: Be brave, be authentic, and be reliant on Jesus. We have to be brave to stay authentic to our beliefs and faith today, but we know reliance on Jesus allows us to "Do everything through Christ, who gives me strength" (Philippians 4:13 NLT). That's a verse I rely on when God asks me to do something out-of-the-box, which is often!

Many of you responded to my last newsletter editorial where I challenged all of us to be brave and authentic in taking a stand for what we believe and taking action when we see the Word of God maligned (Titus 2:5). I was especially inspired by Raini Bowles who sent me a response to my question: "My challenge to Christian readers and audiences is this: What are you doing to keep the Word of God glorified, sanctified, revered, and honored?"

Raini wrote that she started a ministry called Shine On:

"Janet,

Thank you for the newsletter and words of encouragement!!! What am I doing to honor and glorify God and keep Him in the forefront? SHINE ON! That's what! I have put together a group of women from the Treasure Valley here in Idaho that meets at a neutral location; we call it SHINE ON, which stands for Share, Help, Inspire, Nurture & Encourage Others Now." ... (Read More)

I am often asked "What difference can one person make?"

Raini Bowles started SHINE ON and women's lives are being blessed.

Stephanie Shott started The M.O.M. Initiative "Changing the World One Mom at a Time".

I started the Woman to Woman Mentoring Ministry at Saddleback Church fifteen years ago, and God expanded the ministry around the world.

Cutting up your J.C. Penney's credit cards, one at a time made a difference: "
J.C. Penney stock crashes with news of gay marriage support"

Tell us about one person you know who is making a difference for God and we'll post the stories in our upcoming newsletters and on my blog. And hey, that one person can be you!

To quote Nathan Basford, a young missionary in Pakistan that our church supports: "Being a Christian isn't difficult, but it's super hard. It's not difficult because everything we need to know to be a Christian is in the Bible, but living it out is hard."

The Lord never said it would be easy being a Christian, but He did say "Follow me and I will make you fishers of men" one person at a time.

So SHINE ON in a dark world!

Dawn Wilson wrote an article "Understanding the Cry of Infertility" on her Hearts Choices Today Blog:

I was one of those "instantly pregnant" women, so I have to admit that it is hard for me to identify with women who struggle to conceive. But that's exactly why I need to read books that help me relate to women who hurt in this area (and others). As a Christ-follower, I am called to rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep (Romans 12:15). I want to be an empathetic friend.

That's why Janet Thompson's book, Dear God, Why Can't I Have a Baby? was so revealing and encouraging. The book not only gives hope and encouragement, it also helps women and couples with tools and direction as they wait to share their love with a child....(Read More)

FEATURED WOMAN TO WOMAN MENTORING MINISTRY TESTIMONY

Dear Janet,
I love hearing from you my friend....we are currently using your "Woman To
Woman Mentoring " in our Women's ministry...seeing fabulous results in all the women involved!  We did our first session in the fall of 2009, and have continued yearly since then.  We are averaging around 10 M&M's each year.  It is amazing what He has done and continues to do through these relationships.

I noticed the Face-to-Face studies in the newsletter and on your web...we are always looking for good resources for our women, especially our M&M's.

I love the "READ" acronym...what a great study/application tool....thanks again so much for sharing your heart and your journey...so thankful.

He has placed you in my own 'great cloud of witnesses'....thankful for how you have mentored me!!

Blessings,
Sandy Temple

   "GRAMMIE'S CORNER"
This is how we have fun in Idaho! There is so much for the grandkids to do and experience. The best part is that they LOVE going to church when they visit and our church just happens to have the river running behind it. A great launching spot for floating down the river, which we did one day to stay cool.

This is a picture of them at a local lake being pulled in a raft with some of their friends.

                                                                                Jocelyn Green

You'll want to read this Author Interview with my dear friend and ICRS roomie, Jocelyn Green, who has written her debut novel which is receiving rave reviews. Jocelyn is my author hero as she continues to write amazing books with two young children at home.

1. Jocelyn, let's talk about Wedded to War (River North Fiction/Moody, July 2012). Please tell us about it.

This novel grew out of research I did for my nonfiction book, Stories of Faith and Courage from the Home Front, which just released this summer, too. Wedded to War was inspired by the life of Civil War nurse Georgeanna Woolsey. So the book begins in April 1861, and the Union Army's Medical Department is a disaster, completely unprepared for the magnitude of war.

A small group of New York City women, including 28-year-old Charlotte Waverly (inspired by Georgeanna), decide to do something about it, and ended up changing the course of the war, despite criticism, ridicule and social ostracism.

Charlotte leaves a life of privilege, wealth-and confining expectations--to be one of the first female nurses for the Union Army. She quickly discovers that she's fighting more than just the Rebellion by working in the hospitals. Corruption, harassment, and opposition from Northern doctors threaten to push her out of her new role. At the same time, her sweetheart disapproves of her shocking strength and independence, forcing her to make an impossible decision: Will she choose love and marriage, or duty to a cause that seems to be losing?

An Irish immigrant named Ruby O'Flannery, who turns to the unthinkable in the face of starvation, holds the secret that will unlock the door to Charlotte's future. But will the rich and poor confide in each other in time?

 2. Ruby's character is fascinating. She represents a lot of women who walk around in undeserved shame. How can we, as women, shed that identity when it's wrongly thrust upon us?

I love Ruby's character, too. I think we can all sympathize with her, or even relate to her. To answer your question, we can reject lies about ourselves, whether they form in our own minds, or are spoken by others, when "we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ" (2 Corinthians 10:5). What does that mean, exactly? It means we make a habit of lining up our thoughts against the truth of Scripture.

For example, we're all sinners, aren't we? We make mistakes. We do wrong. Satan wants us to believe we are irreparably damaged by those sins, and that those sins absolutely define us. But here's where we take that thought captive and obedient to Christ--what does God say about our sin? 1 John 1:9 says: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." So there you have it. We need to choose to believe God's opinion of us rather than anyone else's. And we can learn God's perspective only from being rooted in the Bible and by prayer.

3. Charlotte is a strong woman who understands her identity and is not afraid to be authentic to that identity. What would you say to the reader who is struggling with knowing who they are, but is afraid to counter social or familial expectations to become that person?

I would remind them of Galatians 1:10: "Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ." To me, this verse calls us to do what we believe God wants us to with our lives, even if others don't understand it.

Very often, doing the right thing is not the popular thing. But as long as you seek after God's will for your life with all your heart and mind, you'll be doing the right thing. That means you have to really search, with more than just your emotions. Study the Bible. Pray. Talk to your pastor and other trusted Christians. "Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed" (Proverbs 15:22). One more caution here--sometimes we think we have our plan or our identity all figured out before consulting God about it. Be open to the idea that God may surprise you with a different path for your life than the one you've chosen.

Now, having said that, if you do have peace that you're following God's will for your life and purpose, go for it with full confidence, and if others don't agree with you, let God work on their hearts. You just do what God wants from you.

4. The idea of being free or set free is a strong element throughout Wedded to War. What does the word freedom mean to you?

Yes, it is. Freedom often conjures up the idea of democracy, liberty, and rights. But the other side of freedom is internal. Even if I live in the "land of the free," if my heart, spirit, or mind is bound up by sin or deception, I'm not truly free. Ruby's character illustrates this--she wasn't really free for a long time. She was enslaved to guilt, shame, and lies. But Jesus sets the captives free.

CONGRATULATIONS!
Winner of last months book "JOY-spirations for Caregivers" is Lisa Keck from Orange, CA

Lisa writes:
First of all, I love your title. I had the privilege of caring for my mother, a woman who only stood 4'11" but cast a mighty big shadow of faith, from 2006-2008.

Just before Thanksgiving of '06 she was diagnosed with Myleodysplastic Syndrome (MDS), the same disease TV News person Robin Roberts (Good Morning America, ABC) was just diagnosed with. She lived with us for a few months while her home was being remodeled (planned before illness) and it wasn't easy meeting her needs and those of my 2 children who were being home schooled.

It got harder when she moved back home, but she was in remission and safe, so we honored her wishes. We talked daily on the phone and I went weekly to run errands. She was blind so this is something I had done before.

In July of 2007 she suffered a collapsed spinal cord and life got crazy. I was at the rehabilitation facility daily to clean her prosthetic eyes to guard against infection. With MDS, a simple infection can be fatal. Anyway, we were able to hire caregivers and get her back in her own home sometime around September/October.

Her MDS came out of remission and Jan. of '08 she went on hospice. She went Home to be with the Lord Feb. 23 but you know what she was doing just 2 weeks before she died? She was singing her song, "Thanks" to friends who had come to visit.

The first verse is, "Thanks for the things You have allowed me to go through. They have brought me Savior much closer to You. Thanks for the heartache. Thanks for the pain. Thanks for the sunshine after the rain."

Like I said, a mighty big shadow from this woman of faith. Thanks for letting me share, Lisa L Keck.
