AHW MINISTRIES NEWSLETTER

About His Work with Janet   January 2012

   BLOGGING FOR YOU IN 2012

Dec 19th - Ashley Inn, Cascade, ID

Our Janet wedding anniversary is December 19th and even though it's so close to Christmas, we make time to celebrate this special day. Part of our celebration is spending time together praying over our marriage goals and visions for the next year. It's amazing how God gives us agreement and clarity. That's how we ended up in Idaho! When people ask us why we're here, our response is "God's timing is always perfect and Idaho is where He wanted us for this season of our lives."

Part of my personal New Year's celebration is also to pray over goals for me and About His Work Ministries for the upcoming year and to review the ones I had set for the ending year. I marvel as I check off dreams and goals God gave me at the beginning of the year and He fulfilled during the year.

A goal that God put on my heart for 2012 was to Blog regularly. Many of you refer to this newsletter as my blog, but I actually have a blog, but I haven't been very good at posting. I love feedback and people seldom comment on my blog so I often feel like I'm writing into space. That's why I prefer Facebook because people talk to you there, but you can't really develop a topic.

So I am promising that I will blog once a week, but I don't want it to be about me. I'd like it to be on topics of interest to you. Here's what I'm asking you to do, if you feel inclined:

  1. Go to my blog and sign up as a follower. There's a new post on a refreshing way to R.E.A.D. the Bible.
  2. Respond to this newsletter and let me know what topics would interest you to blog about and discuss.

Proverbs 15:22 warns that "Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed." So I'm awaiting your wise counsel and I hope that God has given you dreams and visions for 2012 too!

Happy New Year!

In Loving Memory of Jessica Joy Rees
4/8/99 - 1/5/12

Jessica Joy Rees was a 12-year old little girl with terminal brain cancer who managed to leave an incredible legacy of helping children with cancer. In the 10 months and 3 days she lived after her diagnosis, she established NEGU--Never Ever Give Up--and started a nonprofit organization to distribute "Joy Jars" to children in hospitals. Read her story to see the power of one person, no matter how young or old, or how many years the good Lord gives you.

Words at the Celebration of Jessie's life  from her daddy, Pastor Eric Rees who is a friend of ours from our Saddleback days, inspire me and I hope they do other survivors too: "Cancer is lonely, limited, and labeled, but Jessie knew how to also make it full of love and laughter!"

FEATURED WOMAN TO WOMAN MENTORING MINISTRY TESTIMONY

Dear Janet,

Our church has started Heart Friends which is patterned after your book, Woman to Woman mentoring.  Our mentors are called Big Sisters and our mentees are called Little Sisters.  Your informative book has been so helpful.

After starting the ministry this summer with a pilot  program, we opened it to the church.  There was much change throughout the process.  Women would commit then drop out at the last moment so we were frantically trying to regoup at the last minute.  We did have two Big Sisters not come to the Reveal night which was very disappointing to the Little Sisters. Our backup plan is for me or one of the other girls administering the ministry to step in when they don't come, but my heart breaks when this happens. I know we are learning while we grow.

First Baptist in town here mentored us when we started the program and we in turn just met with the women's ministry team at Ridgecrest and they are working to start this in their church as well.  God is so good!

Thanks again for your thorough information.  I'm looking forward to communicating with you in the future.

Thanks for being about the Lords work!

"GRAMMIE'S CORNER"

Happy New Year

New Year's Eve @ Grammie and Grampa's

The grandkids saw in the New Year with us with hats, noise makers, and horns. Around 7:30 New Years Eve, I let them go out on the deck and blow their horns and yell "Happy New Year" as loud as they wanted. Since we live in the mountains it was very dark and quiet accept for their noise making, so they were pretty much yelling into space.

I heard 6 year-old Brandon hopefully comment to his sisters as he looked up into the sky, "Maybe God can hear us!"

"You bet He can!" I assured him, and so they kept making a joyful noise unto the Lord.

Leave It With Him    Elizabeth Lonseth

Elizabeth Lonseth has self-published a Christian fictional series.  As traditional publishers reduce their number of titles, many authors have chosen to self-publish. I asked Elizabeth to share with us her experiences with this genre.

Elizabeth has graciously offered to send a free copy of Leave It With Him, to the first person who responds to this interview.

1. When and how did you know you wanted to be an author?

Despite the fact I was an avid reader growing up, I never wanted to be a writer. The Lord used my husband to challenge me to write.

In 2004, we were anchored off Lopez Island in the Northwest corner of Washington State. I had told my husband a story as we ate dinner on the back deck of our boat. He looked at me and said, "You need to write a book." The gentle yet intense tone of his voice made me take the notion seriously. I started praying about what to write as I did the dishes in the galley.

2. What inspired you to write this book?

For many years the lack of good moral entertainment in literature and in film has bothered me. With the boat gently rocking, the idea of showing a young man learning to walk with the Lord came to mind. He would be a modern day Daniel or David, a hero. The Puget Sound waters and the San Juan Islands of Washington State would be the geographical setting  in the late 1960's. After finishing the dishes, I wrote an outline for the book. By the time I went to bed, I had four chapters written with ideas for a series popping into mind. And so, "Leave It With Him" was born.

3. What has been your experience with self-publishing?

At first, publishing "Leave It With Him" was not even considered. As encouragement from my family and readers grew, my husband and I began to research publishing. This was in 2005 and the publishing industry had already begun the big change attributed to the Internet. We met authors who had waited six, seven, and in one case, fourteen years to have their work traditionally published. My husband believed that I had a strong message in my writing and should not wait, so we explored self-publishing.

Being an interior designer, not a writer, I faced a major learning curve. The Lord kept answering my prayers and leading me down the right path.  After a year of hashing through the book with a personal editor, my husband and I signed with a reputable Christian self-publishing company. Although they produced a wonderful product, it was an expensive way to go.

With my second book, we went with a secular well-known company, at about half the cost. The finished product was just as professional as the first book.

Some bookstores will not take self-published work. Today, most bookstores are struggling to exist. My books are with Barnes and Noble, Christian book.com, and Amazon. Soon they will be available as e-books.

My weekly blog, which began with the publishing of my first book, has grown to 800 - 1,000 hits a week.   Overall, self-publishing has been a good experience.

4. Can you offer advice and encouragement to those with a story to tell?

Pray a lot. I occasionally wonder if writing is something my Lord really wants me to do. He gives me a YES by having some reader convey how my writing has helped them or a non-Christian lets me know they enjoyed the book, especially the spiritual part. Continually ask for the Lord's direction.

Shop around for a self-publisher and be prepared to market your writing.  Find a personal editor and purchase several edits from the self-publishing company. I found those edits invaluable. Join a critique group.

And again, PRAY.

There are two self published novels in the Johansen Family Series, Leave It With Him, and Cares Of This World with three more to come. Visit Elizabeth's website
