IN THE PINK!
It's that time of year again. Yes, it's the Fall season when you don't usually think pink, but October is also National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As many of you know, I am a breast-cancer survivor, and I might not be writing to you today if I hadn't faithfully had my annual mammogram. It saddened me to read in our local newspaper that my new home state of Idaho ranks one of the lowest in the country for women having mammograms. Maybe that's one of the reason's God moved us here so I could put a face to survival and a voice to hope.
Another disturbing fact is the number of survivors who neglect having follow-up exams after completion of breast-cancer treatment and the many distorted reports of studies devaluing the benefit of mammograms for survivors. Well, I'm a living disclaimer to that misfortune and misinformation since my two recurrences were each detected by a mammogram. MRI's are another beneficial test for detecting problems even earlier than a mammogram.
Here's my point ladies: DO NOT put off your annual exams. I know they're not fun and it's inconvenient and uncomfortable, but only for a few minutes that could add years to your life! Don't let fear, finances, or procrastination stop you from setting an appointment and encouraging women in your sphere of influence who are over 40 to go and do likewise.
Salvation assured me of eternal life, and mammograms assured me a longer earthly life to share Jesus. Join me in my mission and ministry to save lives both on earth and for eternity.

A comment on my blog from a "Mommy-In-Waiting"
Hi Janet,
Just wanted to tell you that I bought your book and I just finish the first chapter. It has been such a blessing for me. My husband and I have been in that same position, and oddly enough, your book goes hand in hand with my current struggles. I love the Sanity Tools, because up to know I felt lost trying to ignore the obvious and just not finding answers. I just did my first journaling and Prayer and Praise Journal... What an amazing book! Anyway, God bless you for allowing Him to use you in such a way. I know talking about this is hard and very painful, but Thank You for making my path less lonely. Hugs, Raquel

FEATURED WOMAN TO WOMAN MENTORING MINISTRY TESTIMONY
Janet,
We are in Prince Albert, SK (Canada) in an Alliance Church (CM&A). We were featured in our district newsletter (pg 6) this past April.
We've completed our first year of mentoring ministry at our church. We used Woman to Woman Mentoring to make our own, Caring Connections: Mentoring Women. We started the mentoring program as a pilot project for an internship requirement last year, and had such great response that we will continue this year too.
We had 36 ladies sign up and it was a great 6 months. During our program we used your VHS - in a kit from 2000. We really enjoyed the material that you share and hope to use it again this year.
We aren't big enough to have more than one going at a time so we run from October to March. Thanks for the info.
Blessings,
Amy

"GRAMMIE'S CORNER"

We had a great time this summer with our Chicago grandkids, Arianna and Nicholas, and their parents at "Snow Mountain Ranch," a YMCA family camp in Grandby, Colorado at the foot of the Rocky Mountain National Forest. What a wholesome fun place with something to do for the whole family! Arianna even braved the zip line which Mom was ready for next, however thunder and lightning postponed her zip line trip!
We were honored that our daughter and her family invited Grammie and Grampa to join them. Awesome memories for the three generations.

Meet An Author

Interview with Yvonne Ortega, author of Finding Hope for Your Journey Through Breast Cancer
- With all the books on cancer already out there, why did you chose to write this book on cancer?
Cancer shattered my world. I wanted a book with Scripture, prayer, and hope, one that would assure patients and their families God would never leave them nor forsake them. I also wanted a book that, with honesty and boldness, would address the emotional roller coaster cancer patients, even Christian ones, endure.
- Is there ever a time when you can laugh about cancer?
I asked God to help me keep my sense of humor. The day my hair started to fall out, I went to work with wet hair. My colleagues thought I had a power outage. I told them I was afraid to blow dry my hair, because I might blow it all off and arrive looking like a Buddhist monk. I laugh now about how angry I was with God. I thought he had made a mistake. Now I understand he used the cancer for good in my life and the lives of others. I laugh every time I reminisce about George, my radiation therapist. He entertained me with stories about his childhood adventures.
- What is the most important lesson you learned from your experience in having cancer?
In God's economy, nothing is wasted, not even cancer. I prayed God would use my battle with cancer to his honor and glory and for furthering his kingdom on earth. I never dreamed he would do that through the publication of my book, TV and radio interviews, and speaking engagements.
- How do you live differently today as a result of having had cancer?
I've learned to listen to my body. When I get tired, I rest. When I'm thirsty, I stop and drink water. I don't put off my dreams because "next year" may never come. I signed up for a phone package with unlimited long-distance to call my family and friends any time. I appreciate the little things in life-walks to enjoy God's beautiful world, a ride in my friend's convertible, and sunset at the beach.
I left teaching to become a full-time substance abuse counselor because I felt God leading me to do so. I put the fleece before the Lord. He confirmed his leading in three ways, and I became a counselor. I never looked back.
When God called me to become his full-time speaker and freelance writer, I prayed, sought God's counsel through the Bible and discussed the decision with my dad and two prayer partners. We all agreed. Six months later, I answered God's call to write and speak for him. I would never have made such significant changes in my life before cancer.
- How did you keep your spirits up while going through the cancer treatments?
I played praise and worship music and watched videos and DVDs by Christian comedians. I planned the party I would have after completing my residency and obtaining my state license. I selected the music for the dance my friend and I would perform. I dreamed about the sheet cake with white icing and hot pink roses with "Yvonne Ortega, LPC, To God be the glory" on the cake. I chose the Bible verses for my party invitations. After my diagnosis, I accepted an invitation to present a workshop on writing devotionals at the Maine Fellowship of Christian Writers conference the following August. I prepared for my workshop and looked forward to the reunion with fellow writers and meals with delicious Maine blueberries.
- Did you ever think about giving up-that the treatments were too hard?
After my second treatment, my blood counts dropped to 500. Normal is between 4,000 and 11,000. My doctor hospitalized me. She said she would release me when my counts rose to 1,000. My counts dropped two days in a row. I called my parents to come see me, but Dad's heart condition prevented them from doing so. I feared I would die alone in a military hospital more than an hour from my home.
After my final chemotherapy treatment, I thought I'd never stop vomiting. I experienced a weariness that made my bones ache. I kept reminding myself it would soon pass and in a few months I would travel to Maine.
- What kinds of emotions did you experience during this time?
I experienced denial. If I didn't talk about the cancer, maybe it would go away.
I experienced anger at God, the Food & Drug Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency, the exposure to second-hand smoke, televangelists who preached health and wealth, and anyone who told me Christians couldn't be angry with God.
Fear overwhelmed me after my diagnosis and at times during treatment.
When I found out the cancer had traveled to one lymph node and adjacent to another, depression forced me to my knees in prayer.
- What can people do to help friends who are going through cancer treatment?
Listen without judging them. Expect cancer patients to ride an emotional roller coaster. Send cards or e-mail greeting cards, especially humorous ones. Phone and visit them. Keep phone calls and visits short. Prepare a meal and take it in a disposable container. Help with yard work and house work. Run errands for them. Take cancer patients to their chemotherapy and radiation treatments and pray with them and for them. Never tell them to call if they need anything. Be the one to call and suggest chores or errands you can handle for them.
