TONIGHT: St. Paul's Music on the Road

Tonight, April 20, at 7:30 PM, the St. Paul's Chamber Singers (which is selected from the ranks of the large St. Paul's Choir) will perform a concert of Choral Classics, Spirituals, and Gospel Music.  The concert will exclusively feature the St. Paul's Chamber Singers.

This special Concert will take place at the  Episcopal Church of the Atonement in Sandy Springs.  (Our own Muriel Jones is the Parish Administrator there!)  The church is located at 4940 High Point Road in Sandy Springs.

This concert is free and open to the public.  The concert is also creating a tremendous amount of excitement throughout the Diocese, as so many Parishes are attempting to learn from St. Paul's.

Come out and support our wonderful music ministry on Friday evening as they carry the light of Christ through music up on the north side of the city.

THIS SATURDAY: Hospice Training

Hospice volunteers are companions and sympathetic listeners for hospice patients who are in the last days of their lives.  They assist with patient and family care providing emotional and spiritual support.  Volunteers visit patients at home as well as in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and personal care homes.  Volunteer activities can include: conversation, listening to music, playing games, running errands, watching TV together, prayer, light housework, and looking at scrapbooks.  The list is only limited by your imagination!

Georgia Hospice is offering Saint Paul's Episcopal Church members an opportunity to learn more about becoming a hospice volunteer.  We are conducting one more educational seminars in Bowden Hall on Saturday, April 21.  The session is 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM with a light breakfast and lunch provided.  You will have the opportunity to ask questions and hear presentations from our staff of administrators, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and certified nursing assistants.  In addition, for those interested in joining our team, full training is offered following the seminar.

Contact Scott Uzzel for additional details.

Brunswick... or BUST!?

St. Paul's is planning a trip to the Golden Isles in June (6/22-6/24), but we need a certain number of commitments to make it happen.

St. Paul's has made the trip twice before and by all accounts it's a fabulous time! This weekend excursion offers a Low Country Boil, a casino cruise, and our friends at St. Athanasius Episcopal Church celebrating their 127th anniversary, all against the backdrop of the rich history, culture, and landscape of the Golden Isles of Brunswick, GA.

Don't let this getaway GET AWAY!!!

Lodging is at the Diocese of Georgia Conference Center and the cost per person is $190 (double occupancy) and children are $100 each (rooming with paid adult). The deadline for trip deposits ($50) has been extended to April 22 in hopes of securing enough folks to make it happen!  PLEASE JOIN IN THE FUN!

For additional information, contact Jean Hazzard or Bob Martin.

Hunger Walk Awards - THIS Sunday!

Parishioners are invited to attend the 2012 Hunger Walk Awards at the 11:15 a.m. worship on Sunday, April 22

The team will present awards to the top three fundraisers for our annual Hunger Walk fundraising efforts for the Episcopal Charities Foundation and a special award to Euleen Josiah-Tanner who, for the second time in a row, represented St. Paul's and won 1st place overall in the 5k Hunger Walk race!

Thanks to everyone who made this year such a wonderful event!

Book of Habakkuk: Adult Bible Study

Come join us for Adult Bible Study from 9:45-10:55 AM on Sundays!

From April 22 - May 6 we will study the book of Habakkuk (we encourage you to read it in advance!) and explore the mysterious and unfathomable (at least to most of us humans) problem of evil.

The prophet Habakkuk asked God these perennial questions: O Lord, how long shall I cry for help, and you will not listen? Or cry to you "Violence" and you will not save? (Hab. 1: 1-2)  We will grapple with these difficult questions. We will look at God's answers to the prophet and to us as we try to understand in view our world today. Cheryl Maddox is facilitating.

UPCOMING: May 13 - May 20... Nadine Baker  Smith will bring a film that we will watch in two parts. It is called Survivor. More information about this film will be forthcoming.

Dementia & Memory Loss Educational Evening

On Monday, April 23, nationally acclaimed dementia care expert Teepa Snow will present an education event to help family, friends, and care-givers better understand the condition of dementia... what it is, why it causes patients to behave the way they do, and what you can do to help.

If you know a family affected by dementia and/or memory loss, consider attending this FREE event at Arbor Terrace at Cascade, 1001 Research Center Atlanta Drive (30331).

Teepa Snow is a Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association, has received local, statewide, and national

recognition for her expertise in geriatrics and dementia care and programming.  She has received awards for her clinical and teaching skills from a wide variety of organizations.  She has helped The ARBOR COMPANY deepen its commitment to enhancing quality of life for residents throughout our assisted living communities.

Thank You from Kim Adams & Family

To our dear St. Paul's Family,

I would like to extend a very warm and sincere thank you for all your kindness, care, prayers and sympathy at the time of my grandmother's death.  Knowing you were thinking of me, my family and our loss meant a great deal to all of us. Personally, I was touched by the many notes, cards, email messages, and other expressions of condolence that have come to us.

My grandmother was a kind, fun-loving woman of God who loved her family, deeply cared for all people, and lived a long, full and happy life. Although her passing is a sad milestone for us, I am grateful for the years we had and I know that her wisdom will live on in the hearts of those she touched.

Thank you, again. When I look back at this time in my life, I will remember you and how deeply you cared when I needed it most. God bless you all!

Kimberly Adams & Family

Thanks for Giving!!

It's national Volunteer Week (April 15-21) and on behalf of Food Pantry Chair Carol Chestnut, I'm pleased to pass along the following THANKS:

I would like to send out  a  special heartfelt thanks to all our volunteers at the food pantry, the thrift shop, and all the men who pick up the food from the Food Bank. I appreciate all that you do for this ministry in our call to serve God by serving his people in need.

With your help we are able to continue our mission to fight hunger in our community. Many thanks also to our parishioner for donating canned goods, monetary gifts, and clothing to to the food pantry. Your kind generosity is greatly appreciated. A special thanks to Tanya Coleman for providing us with all of our grocery bags from Publix.

I appreciate your dedication, your love, and support!

Healing Service Follow-Up

From Jorge Lawton:

A profound THANK YOU to my spiritual family of St. Paul's for your outpouring of love, support, and The Holy Spirit's grace at last Sunday's Ecumenical Healing Service (April 15).   This moving parish witness was led by our Rev. Charles L. Fischer, III, Rev. Monroe Freeman, Rev. Kim Jackson, and special guests, Rev. Jeffrey Paull Cave (Norcross) and Rev. Joe Eldridge (Methodist, Head Chaplain, American University, W. D. C.).

Quiet and key "behind the scenes" coordination came from Kelly King, Leslie Epps, Ricky Wood, and Dra. Sabine Y. Prokscha (Frei Universitat, Berlin).

Our Maestro Trey Clegg, soloists Persis Bristol, Mickey Eaddy and the incomparable St. Paul's Choir left us literally  spellbound,  while Paul Robeson international singer Luci Murphy (W. D. C.) closed with the haunting Chilean folksong of Violeta Parra, Gracias a La Vida! (Thanks for  Life!).

Guests and family throughout the sanctuary joined the clergy in "laying on of Hands"in a human circle of spiritual support.

Thank you, everyone.

~Jorge

Water Bearers Wanted!

As you all know by now, St. Paul's did some recent beautification of the grounds and installed new plants that need water-sponsors.

We are currently soliciting volunteers to water the plants at least 3 times a week. We invite each organization to sponsor a month (or any time span that's comfortable for the size of your group).

Email Gale Taylor for more information or to sign up!

Community Garden Ministry

From Carol Chestnut, Food Pantry Chair:

Eddie Hollingsworth, and Birson Allen will chair The Community Garden Ministry with a theme of:

Plant-A-Row-For-The-Hungry.

We have 19 people who receive food at the St. Paul's Food Pantry signed up to volunteer with cultivating the soil, planting, and weeding. This will help to encourage self-reliance, and will help supplement their food supply with fresh vegetables.

If you like to volunteer or donate garden tools to the effort, please contact Eddie Hollingsworth. (We really need a garden tiller!)

Your kind generosity is greatly appreciated.

Red Envelope Campaign Continues

Speaking of Women's Day... ECW is still asking all women of the church to support the RED ENVELOPE CAMPAIGN

Because of the vast array of ministries and events that ECW supports, they are counting at least 270 women to pay their dues in order to operate within budget for 2012 (we still need more than 125 women to contribute!). This money offsets the expenses of guest speakers, hospitality, outreach efforts, and more.

If you're a woman of the parish, you are already a member of ECW. We encourage you to activate your membership by submitting $20 for annual dues. Dues may be submitted in the red envelopes located in the pews and then placed in the alms basin. THANK YOU!

Book 'Em!

Did you know you can fight crime with literacy!?!

Consider thisSome prison authorities believe they can predict the future prison population by looking at third-grade reading scores.

A typical middle class child enters first grade with approximately 1,000 hours of being read to, while the corresponding child from a low-income family averages just 25 of those hours, such differences in the availability of book resources may have unintended and pernicious consequences for low-income children's long term success in schooling. (M. Adams, Beginning to Read, MIT Press, Cambridge, MA, 1990).

The most successful way to improve the reading achievement of low-income children is to increase their access to print.

St. Paul's Outreach Committee invites you to invest in a child's future!  Donate a new or used book to benefit the children of our partner schools, Peyton Forest and F.L. Stanton elementary schools.  Donations will be accepted during the months of April and May.  The book tub will be located in the main hallway of the church.  Thank you for helping our community to move forward!
