 BEST WISHES TO ALL!

Good morning, Everyone!

I hope you all had a glorious and joyful Easter. Last Sunday was spectacular and on behalf of St. Paul's I extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who came forward, pitched in, helped out, and gave back to the church on our biggest day of the year. WE APPRECIATE YOU ALL!

As you look over the latest issue of the St. Paul's Post, I encourage you to pay particular attention to the following:
  • Jorge Lawton's Ecumenical Healing Service with Laying on of Hands is this Sunday, April 15 at 5PM. See below for additional details.
  • The trip to Brunswick is in the balance! The deadline has been extended to give more folks the chance to sign-up. Don't miss it!!
  • Hospice training is next week at St. Paul's and if you ever wanted to make a real difference in someone's life, this is a great opportunity to do so.  See the article for more information.

Best to Everyone,

Kelly King

THIS SUNDAY: Healing Service for Jorge Lawton

Jorge Lawton will be admitted to Emory Hospital on April 16 for his bone marrow transplant.

Diagnosed 3½ years ago with a rare form of blood cancer (multiple myeloma, medically considered to be "incurable") Jorge's kidneys will not withstand any more chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant using his own healthy stem cells appears to be his last hope.

This Sunday, April 15, St. Paul's is holding an Ecumenical Healing Service to lift Jorge and his medical team up in prayer for strength, endurance, concentration, comfort, and a successful outcome.

In attendance will be:

  • Jorge's close clergy friends: Methodist, Baptist, Catholic, Islam and other Episcopalians.
  • Internationally recognized singer, Luci Murphy, from Washington, D.C. to sing Violeta Parra's hauntingly beautiful Chilean folk song, Gracias a La Vida {Thanks for Life}.
  • Medical professionals from Emory University's Winship Cancer Institute and other Clinics who served as members of Jorge's medical teams  (including oncology, cardiology, nephrology, endocrinology, opthalmology, oral surgery, and primary care).

Everyone is invited. A light reception will follow the service.

It includes interactive workshops, and service projects with other hunger fighting organizations in metro Atlanta. There are two sessions this summer and 20 metro Atlanta high school students will be chosen to participate in each session. Participants will earn 32 community service hours, have an amazing time, and build new friendships while learning so much about how to help their community!

For more information or to download and application, visit the Atlanta Community Food Bank website.

APPLICATION DEADLINE IS TODAY (APRIL 13)

Session #1:  June 12-15, 2012- 8:30am-4:30pm Tuesday - Friday

Calling all Deltas!

All Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. Sorors who are members of St. Paul's are asked to meet this Sunday (April 15) after the 11:15 worship.

If you have any suggestions and/or items to place on the agenda please forward that information to Carol Stone-Taylor at castpeach@bellsouth.net We're looking forward to greeting Sorors who are new to St. Paul's and making plans for the future.

Everyone's participation is encouraged and appreciated.

NEXT WEEK: Hospice Training, Two Chances

Hospice volunteers are companions and sympathetic listeners for hospice patients who are in the last days of their lives.  They assist with patient and family care providing emotional and spiritual support.  Volunteers visit patients at home as well as in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and personal care homes.  Volunteer activities can include: conversation, listening to music, playing games, running errands, watching TV together, prayer, light housework, and looking at scrapbooks.  The list is only limited by your imagination!

Georgia Hospice is offering Saint Paul's Episcopal Church members an opportunity to learn more about becoming a hospice volunteer.  We are conducting educational seminars in Bowden Hall on Tuesday, April 17 and Saturday, April 21.  Both sessions are 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM with a light breakfast and lunch provided.  You will have the opportunity to ask questions and hear presentations from our staff of administrators, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and certified nursing assistants.  In addition, for those interested in joining our team, full training is offered following the seminar.

Contact Scott Uzzel for additional details.

Brunswick... or BUST!?

St. Paul's is planning a trip to the Golden Isles in June (6/22-6/24), but we need a certain number of commitments to make it happen.

St. Paul's has made the trip twice before and by all accounts it's a fabulous time! This weekend excursion offers a Low Country Boil, a casino cruise, and our friends at St. Athanasius Episcopal Church celebrating their 127th anniversary, all against the backdrop of the rich history, culture, and landscape of the Golden Isles of Brunswick, GA.

Don't let this getaway GET AWAY!!!

Lodging is at the Diocese of Georgia Conference Center and the cost per person is $190 (double occupancy) and children are $100 each (rooming with paid adult). The deadline for trip deposits ($50) has been extended to April 22 in hopes of securing enough folks to make it happen!  PLEASE JOIN IN THE FUN!

For additional information, contact Jean Hazzard or Bob Martin.

Citizens for all Seasons

Citizens for all Seasons will have a free showing of the movie, "The Help" on Wednesday, April 18 at 1:00PM.

Please bring a covered dish to share.  See you in Bowden Hall!

Dr. Beth-Sarah Wright Scholarship 2012

Water Bearers Wanted!

As you all know by now, St. Paul's did some recent beautification of the grounds and installed new plants that need water-sponsors.

We are currently soliciting volunteers to water the plants at least 3 times a week. We invite each organization to sponsor a month (or any time span that's comfortable for the size of your group).

Email Gale Taylor for more information or to sign up!

Hunger Walk Awards - Next Sunday!

Parishioners are invited to attend the 2012 Hunger Walk Awards at the 11:15 a.m. worship on Sunday, April 22

The team will present awards to the top three fundraisers for our annual Hunger Walk fundraising efforts for the Episcopal Charities Foundation and a special award to Euleen Josiah-Tanner who, for the second time in a row, represented St. Paul's and won 1st place overall in the 5k Hunger Walk race!

Thanks to everyone who made this year such a wonderful event!

Community Garden Ministry

From Carol Chestnut, Food Pantry Chair:

Eddie Hollingsworth, and Birson Allen will chair The Community Garden Ministry with a theme of:

Plant-A-Row-For-The-Hungry.

We have 19 people who receive food at the St. Paul's Food Pantry signed up to volunteer with cultivating the soil, planting, and weeding. This will help to encourage self-reliance, and will help supplement their food supply with fresh vegetables.

If you like to volunteer or donate garden tools to the effort, please contact Eddie Hollingsworth. (We really need a garden tiller!)

Your kind generosity is greatly appreciated.

Early Easter Angels... THANK YOU!

From Richard (Ricky) Wood:

I would like to give a special thanks to the special people who left their warm beds between 3:30 and 4:00 AM, to be at the church between 4:30 and 5:00 AM to prepare Easter breakfast for more than 300 St. Paul's parishioners.

THANK YOU TO: Andrew Smith, Corby Hannah, James Jackson, Kim & Randall Adams, Jean George, Agnes & Len Anderson, David Martin, Jean Simon-Hazzard, Leroy Henderson (and, of course, as always... Pinkie Wood). We had a wonderful time and everyone worked exceptionally well together. THANKS TO ALL!

Women's Day 2012

The Episcopal Church Women (ECW) hope you enjoyed the First Lady's Holy Saturday Prayer Breakfast.  ECW continues its commitment to provide meaningful experiences for women and the church and invites you to Women's Day 2012, Sunday, April 29 at the 11:15 AM service.

This year's speaker is Rev. Sherri Wood-Powe, daughter of our own Ricky & Sarah Wood. Join us as Rev. Wood-Powe speaks on "Women Building Christian Bridges".

We ask and encourage all women to wear white on Women's Day.  Thank you!

Red Envelope Campaign Continues

Speaking of Women's Day... ECW is still asking all women of the church to support the RED ENVELOPE CAMPAIGN

Because of the vast array of ministries and events that ECW supports, they are counting at least 270 women to pay their dues in order to operate within budget for 2012 (we still need more than 125 women to contribute!). This money offsets the expenses of guest speakers, hospitality, outreach efforts, and more.

If you're a woman of the parish, you are already a member of ECW. We encourage you to activate your membership by submitting $20 for annual dues. Dues may be submitted in the red envelopes located in the pews and then placed in the alms basin. THANK YOU!

United Thank Offering

Praise God from whom all blessings flow...

Those who share in the United Thank Offering, both givers and receivers, must consider certain discernible truths. For one, tremendous efforts  bring to pass great accomplishments to the glory of God and to the benefit of people in so many varying areas of need all over the world.

Blue boxes are available for your coins, bills, or checks. Mark your calendars for the Spring In-Gathering on May 6!

Throw (a) Book At Them!

Did you know you can fight crime with literacy!?!

Consider thisSome prison authorities believe they can predict the future prison population by looking at third-grade reading scores.

A typical middle class child enters first grade with approximately 1,000 hours of being read to, while the corresponding child from a low-income family averages just 25 of those hours, such differences in the availability of book resources may have unintended and pernicious consequences for low-income children's long term success in schooling. (M. Adams, Beginning to Read, MIT Press, Cambridge, MA, 1990).

The most successful way to improve the reading achievement of low-income children is to increase their access to print.

St. Paul's Outreach Committee invites you to invest in a child's future!  Donate a new or used book to benefit the children of our partner schools, Peyton Forest and F.L. Stanton elementary schools.  Donations will be accepted during the months of April and May.  The book tub will be located in the main hallway of the church.  Thank you for helping our community to move forward!

Uncle Sam Says...

"With the April 17 tax deadline approaching, procrastinators may be in a rush to find the tax information they need. Businesses, media, web masters and others may also be looking for creative ways to help their own website's visitors find official IRS tax information and tools."
