Water The Trees... PLEASE?!

On Saturday, March 17, St. Paul's installed new plants, a walkway, and an entrance sign.

The walkway and the sign can take care of themselves, but the plants need our help and support!

We are currently soliciting volunteers to water the plants at least 3 times a week. We invite each organization to sponsor a month (or any time span that's comfortable for the size of your group).

Email Gale Taylor for more information or to sign up!

Intercessory Prayer Team

Prayer Ministry

From "Mama" Eva Byrd:

St. Paul's Intercessory Prayer Team is planning an overnight prayer retreat:

Friday & Saturday, March 30 - 31

Daniel's Prayer Garden

3430 Land Rd

Alpharetta,  GA  30004

We will meet for dinner on Friday night and the retreat will end on Saturday about 4:00 pm.  The devotional leader will be Adina Coakley, the daughter of our very own Alicia Thomas.  We would like for all of you to join us.  Truly there are facilities for at least 200 persons!!

Let me tell you about the Prayer Team.  We meet monthly for prayer and breakfast at different members' homes or wherever the host schedules the gathering.  We are made aware of prayer needs and concerns via email and phone messages.  Perhaps you have observed a group of us gathering at the altar after the 11:15 am service for prayer petitions and thanksgivings.

We are sorely in need of male participation and encouragement.  Please join us and let us together raise our voices in love and praise to our Lord.  For more information, please contact our chairperson, Mama Eva.

As the Word of God tells us, let us pray without ceasing.

Red Envelopes Keep ECW in the Black!

The Episcopal Church Women (ECW)

is asking all women of the church to support the RED ENVELOPE CAMPAIGN

Because of the vast array of ministries and events that ECW supports, they are counting at least 270 women to pay their dues in order to operate within budget for 2012 (so far, we have just under 100 women who have contributed). This money offsets the expenses of guest speakers, hospitality, outreach efforts, and more.

If you're a woman of the parish, you are already a member of ECW. We encourage you to activate your membership by submitting $20 for annual dues. Dues may be submitted in the red envelopes located in the pews and then placed in the alms basin. THANK YOU!

 Easter Flower Tributes

Every year, St. Paul's fills the sanctuary with lilies and other flowers in celebration of Easter. Parishioners are invited to pay tribute to loved ones by donating $25 to the Easter Flower Fund and providing a written tribute "In Memory of..." or "In Thanksgiving for..." a special someone (or someones) you'd like to honor. All tributes will appear in the worship bulletin on Easter Day.

The deadline for submissions is March 30. We cannot guarantee late submissions will be included.

Tribute forms are available in the church, in the church office, or you may simply email your tribute to Leslie.

Flowers for the Easter Cross

Each year, St. Paul's decorates an Easter Cross on Easter Sunday after the Sunrise Service and before the 11:15 Service. We invite everyone to bring one live flower to place on the cross. From your garden, your yard, or the side of the road. All God's blossoms are welcomed.

The cross will be outside near the Columbarium.

Hunger Walk Awards

The  Hunger Walk team invites parishioners to attend the 2012 Hunger Walk Awards at the 11:15 a.m. worship on Sunday, April 22.

The team will present awards to the top three fundraisers for our annual Hunger Walk fundraising efforts for the Episcopal Charities Foundation and a special award to Euleen Josiah-Tanner who, for the second time in a row, represented St. Paul's and won 1st place overall in the 5k Hunger Walk race!

Thanks to everyone who made this year such a wonderful event!

The 5 Sisters of Spelman
Pictured L-R: Dorian, Dawn, Donni, Dennise, and Deidre

In the Spring of 1991, the first two of five Turner Sisters graduated from Spelman College, Dennise and Donni Turner. They were followed next by sisters Dawn ('95), Dorian ('99) and Deidre ('01).  Their decision to attend Spelman was not by chance, since in fact their father, Dr. Dennis Turner Jr. attended Morehouse College ('68) and their mother, Janet Tillman Turner, aunts Dr. Clifton Tinsley, Georgianne Tinsley and Dr. Betty Tinsley and Great Grandmother, Mrs. N. P. Tillman, Sr. (Mattie, wife of Dr. N. P. Tillman Sr., Dean, Atlanta University and mother of Dr. N. P. Tillman, Jr., Dean, Delaware State College) had also attended Spelman.

In this era of Black Woman achievement, the idea of five (5) sisters "finishing" Spelman is not so far fetched.  The sisters as young women were guided in their college decision-making process by the legacy of the Spelman experience but also by the generations of Spelman women who were giants in their own right.

Dennise (M.A., University of Chicago) is a PhD candidate at Georgia State University and an adjunct Professor of History at Morehouse College.  Donni, (J.D., Howard University School of Law) has followed her dream to be on Capitol Hill by working in the Clinton White House, and as legislative assistant to Democratic Senate Majority Leader, Richard (Dick) Durbin of Illinois, Senators Max Cleland and Sam Nunn of Georgia and Representative David Scott, also of Georgia.  Donni is presently Director of Policy, Labor Department for the State of Maryland.

True to its mission of training the next generation of women leaders, Spelman was instrumental in inspiring Dawn Turner (Ed.D.) in her career as Lead Counselor and Counselor of the Year at Henry County High School.  Dorian (M.A., New York University in Latin American Studies) continues to pursue acting while teaching both Spanish and Portuguese to aspiring students of all ages, and has traveled and studied extensively in South America.

The last Turner sister, Deidre was a reporter and anchor in Savannah, GA.  While working at ABC News in New York City during the tragic days of 9/11, she and her colleagues won the prestigious Peabody Award for Outstanding Reporting.  Deidre is married to Kevin Johnson (Morehouse College '01) and they are the proud parents of a 4 month old, Miles Christopher.

It is fitting and proper to celebrate their accomplishments. It is also appropriate that we salute the "Turner 5" and the school that helped produce them - Spelman College.

Be There When Someone Needs You Most

Are you ready to make a difference in the lives of those who need you the most?  Do you enjoy hearing stories and holding hands?  Are you

compassionate as well as passionate about blessings others?  If you said "yes" to these questions, you probably should consider becoming a hospice volunteer!

Hospice volunteers are companions and sympathetic listeners for hospice patients who are in the last days of their lives.  They assist with patient and family care providing emotional and spiritual support.  Volunteers visit patients at home as well as in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and personal care homes.  Volunteer activities can include: conversation, listening to music, playing games, running errands, watching TV together, prayer, light housework, and looking at scrapbooks.  The list is only limited by your imagination!

Georgia Hospice is offering Saint Paul's Episcopal Church members an opportunity to learn more about becoming a hospice volunteer.  We are conducting educational seminars on Tuesday, April 17 and Saturday, April 21.  Both sessions are 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM with a light breakfast and lunch  provided.  You will have the opportunity to ask questions and hear presentations from our staff of administrators, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and certified nursing assistants.  In addition, for those interested in joining our team, full training is offered following the seminar.

Georgia Hospice has been blessed to care for one of Saint Paul's special saints--Reese Johnson.  Our team has enjoyed getting to know Reese and his family.  We thank you for giving us this blessing!  We hope that you will consider becoming a volunteer to help other saints in our communities receive our love and support!

Contact Scott Uzzel for additional details.
