"...he taught them
as one who had authority..."

Believing in Jesus is great, but giving Jesus authority over your life is better. You might say that, faith is our evolving recognition and response to God's authority in the real world. As Jesus walked and talked around Palestine people marveled at how devils and devoted people alike recognized Jesus' authority.
Of course, authority is related to being authentic. Just watch somebody try to talk about a place they have never been. People saw in Jesus, genuine yearning for God. Genuine love. Genuine faith. Jesus was in no way, counterfeit! Jesus taught truth and truth always fights falsehood.
One mark of giving Jesus' teaching authority in our lives is we quickly learn that falsehood is incompatible with faith. To give Jesus authority over our lives is to hand Him the keys to where we keep our falsehood hid. Many times our falsehood is hid away so well, even we can't find it. And yet, in every story about Jesus, he uses his unique power and authority to bless people. He knows where the falsehood is.
Imagine Jesus quoting Moses and commanding our falsehood to, "let my people go!" Be encouraged in this, every disciple is on this journey. Be encouraged, Jesus specializes in making sick things well and setting people free by His truth.
