Seeing
From the Very Reverend Robert C. Wright,
Rector

"We saw His star rising and we came to worship Him."

Matthew 2.2

We celebrate the wise men reaching the manger this week.

Epiphany.

We're used to seeing them robed in their red and purple, kneeling silently, offering gold, frankincense and myrrh to the infant Jesus.  But Matthew says they have something profound on their lips.  The wise men explain they have travelled from modern day Iraq to Jerusalem because,  "We saw His star rising and we have come to worship Him."  In their wisdom they saw His star rising.

What about us? Wisdom confesses that, the world is hobbled.  Everything is not all right.  We have given ourselves too often to shiny things rather than His star and the consequences are tragic. We are clearer now, maybe than ever before, that, "Our ways are not God's ways."  Yet!

Rising out of the wreckage of our vain imaginings is Jesus, ever gracious.  Displacing even the most insidious darkness is Jesus and His love. Some are finally seeing His star now that the night is blackest.  His star is rising!  It's thrilling when we see His star rise in our life and the lives of others.  It's thrilling when we see that Jesus is God's sovereign truth, generously given and deserving of worship born of humility out an experience of mercy.  And, yet, more thrilling is the joy of confirmation, through the Holy Spirit, that Jesus is Lord of all. His rising star is all the light we need for the journeys of our lives.
