Massage research gaining momentum...
The Massage Therapy Foundation (USA) has issued a call for manuscripts for the debut of its new peer-reviewed journal, the International Journal of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork: Research, Education & Practice (IJTMB).

The journal's inaugural issue is set for June, with subsequent issues appearing in August, October and December. In 2009, quarterly issues are scheduled to appear in March, June, September and December.

The IJTMB explains its focus and scope as follows: "The IJTMB provides a professional forum for editorial input; scientifically-based articles of a research, educational and practice-oriented nature; readers' commentaries on journal content and related professional matters; and pertinent news and announcements."

Diana Thmpson, President  of the Massage Therapy Foundation will be Key Note speaker at this year's AAMT National Conference in Adelaide (16-18 May).

For more detailed information about the IJTMB, including detailed submission information, professional news and collaboration opportunities, conference information and articles of interest, please visit the journal's Web site at by clicking here.

Best wishes and stay healthy!

Glide Cupping for Massage Therapists
** positions still available for Brisbane (May 24-25)**

Glide Cupping is a fabulous addition to the toolbox for Massage Therapists. It is a modified version of the ancient Eastern-style cupping which major differences include targetting the musculo-skeletal system rather than meridian systems used by traditional Chinese practitioners and using the cups in a moving sequence, rather than stationery. Myofascial Release techniques are used with vacuum cups to re-align and hydrate fascia.

Glide Cupping also saves the hands of the MT and suction can be varied using a vacuum gun which dictates the level of negative pressure from deep to very subtle, allowing the MT to cup in areas not normally associated with traditional flame cups.

This workshop is a must-do event for the professional therapist seeking a change from the 'thumb busting' day in day out approach to your day in the clinic.

What's covered?

  • History of cupping and how it has evolved
  • Integrating cupping sequences into massage treatments
  • Specific myofascial cupping techniques will be learnt
  • Benefits of cupping for specific conditions
  • Contra-indications and safe use by the MT
  • Cleaning and maintaining equipment

In the afternoon of the second day, under the guidance of the instructor, MT's will practise their new Glide Cupping sequences on fellow students to reach a level of competency that will allow them to introduce their new skills into the clinic the following day.

** positions still available for Brisbane (May 24-25)**

  7. Hours you work - My working hours are from Tuesday to Friday - 10am to 7pm or later.
  8. What do you like about being a massage therapist - I love being a massage therapist and doing the instant pain relief, with clients walking out with a smile on their faces.
  9. Favourite/most used massage techniques - My favourite techniques is from the Lester Cox manual called 'Corrective Manipulation of Muscles, Tendons and Ligaments.  I have had amazing results with necks, shoulders and sciatic pain. ( I don't know why his techniques have not been as popular as the Bowen). Lester is still alive in his seventies and lives in Bairnsdale.
  10. Funny work-related story - My favourite funny story is of a woman in her 70's who came in bent over and could not believe it when she got off the table and upright with no pain.  She kept bending and twisting and was sure the pain was going to come back.  Still hasn't six months later.
