April 1 Call to Service Summit to Honor Gov. Jim Florio

Governor Jim Florio will be honored with the Alain Daniels Civic Responsibility Award at the Call to Service Summit on April 1, 2011  at 6:30 pm at Rutgers-Camden. John Sheridan, President and CEO of Cooper Health System and former Kean cabinet member, will present the award.  The Alain Daniels Civic Responsibility Award, created by the Citizens Campaign in memory of the citizen leadership of Camden resident Alain Daniels (read more) will recognize Governor Florio's exemplary record of public service.

Governor Florio entered into public service 40 years ago in the City of Camden. His lifelong commitment to the people of New Jersey began in Camden City Hall, and took him all the way to Congress and then the State House where he served as the Governor of New Jersey.  

 
The Summit co-hosts are Rutgers University- Camden and the Community Foundation of South Jersey. Rutgers Chancellor, Wendell Pritchett will welcome the audience, and Camden Mayor Dana Redd will be the keynote speaker. Over 200 citizens are expected to attend. The event is free and light refreshments will be served. Register now.   
 

The Summit will include 4 panels on Paths to Power for Camden residents teaching them how to get results on issues affecting the city. "The City of Camden is at a crossroads -- it can succumb to pressures and fail or it can rise to the challenge and succeed. We believe the City of Camden has what it takes to succeed by tapping its greatest resource; its citizens," said Harry Pozycki, Chair of the Citizens Campaign and Sidney Hargrove, Chair of the Community Foundation of South Jersey in the Courier Post March 20th article. (read more) 

Perth Amboy School Board embraces insurance reform, projects
$3 million in savings

Present a Cost Savings Proposal in Your Town!The Perth Amboy School Board has embraced the model insurance contracting reform presented to them by Perth Amboy resident Maria Garcia, and projects that it will save the school district $3 million. The proposal was first adopted in Cherry Hill, saving them a projected $3 million in 2011 and $3 million in 2012. The Citizens Campaign's People's Tool Kit offers citizens the opportunity to take charge and present cost savings opportunitites to their towns and school boards to help reduce spending through efficiency and waste cutting. Be a neighborhood leader of your Political Party
Filing deadline is April 11. 

Learn how to run for a Political Party Committee Seat! Have a say in the leadership of your  Party by becoming a Political Party Committee member. These positions control party platform priorities and choices of party backed candidates from Mayor to Governor. In your neighborhood there is one position reserved for a man, and one for a woman in both parties. The deadline to file to run for these positions is coming up on April 11th. These powerful positions can be won by one vote in some instances.

Cities are adopting strong Pay to Play regulations

Stand up for Pay to Play Regulation!The NJ Department of Community Affairs now requires adoption of The Citizens Campaign's model Pay To Play Reform ordinance before state funding is provided to municipalities under their State transitional aid program. Strong pay to play reform on the local level is needed  to help curb local corruption and cut wasteful spending. Citizen leaders are taking charge in their cities and making presentations to governing bodies in support of their adopting strong Pay to Play regulations and major cities have responded by adopting the measure, including Atlantic City, Camden and Paterson. Judy Bady, Paterson resident, made a presentation in her city in support of Pay to Play reform. She said, "I was honored that the Citizens Campaign taught me to speak on behalf of the pay to play ordinance. I will do whatever I can in support of the cause." (watch video) Opportunities exist for you to make a presentation to your city council in support of adopting strong Pay to Play controls.
