Citizen Leader Saves Vineland $90,000 with Cost Savings Measure

Lee Burke, Citizen Leader helped saved Vineland $90,000In July the Vineland City Council found $90,000 in savings by adopting a Citizens' Campaign cost savings measure which reduced health insurance costs by eliminating benefits for part-time elected and appointed municipal officials. The savings measure was presented to the City Council by Vineland resident Lee Burke, who is the Citizens' Campaign Cumberland County Chairman. Lee said, "The City Council should be commended for adopting this proposal, which was initiated by citizen action, and embraced by the city. Personal self-interest was put aside for the benefit of community and taxpayers. And at the end of the day, serving in elected office is a public service, and should not be a source of personal gain."

According to the Citizens' Campaign, towns can save from $12,000 to $20,000 for each person removed from the local health benefits plan. Through its Law and Policy Task Force, the Citizens' Campaign has developed 20 local government savings measures, which have the potential to save towns millions of dollars annually. The Citizens' Campaign trains regular citizens to be "Citizen Legislators" who can successfully introduce these cost savings to governing bodies for consideration. Become a Citizen Legislator now! Help save your town money and reduce taxes.
