Newark Residents Keeping Newark at the Forefront of Reform
On Wednesday May 5th Newark resident, Erika Key became a Citizen Legislator and made a constructive proposal to a receptive Newark City Council. Erika presented the Council with a ready for adoption Redevelopment Pay to Play reform ordinance. A group of Newark residents came out to support her. The Citizens Campaign's Communications Director Heather Taylor provided press coordination.

Erika became active as a leader because she wants to help keep Newark at the forefront of cleanErika Key presents a Redevelopment Pay to Play law to Newark City Council government. "Upon taking office, Mayor Booker and the City Council were able to adopt the strongest reform package of any city in the State at the time; we are asking our leaders to finish the job they started four years ago and keep Newark at the forefront of clean government," she said.

The Redevelopment Pay to Play ordinance she presented to the council places a ban on contributions by developers
seeking or performing redevelopment contracts in the City of Newark. Action by both Mayor Booker and the City Council would protect Newark's reputation for clean contracting and guard the city coffers from the waste associated with pay-to-play.
Perth Amboy Residents Meet with City Officials on Cost Cutting Measures

Historic Perth Amboy City HallAt Perth Amboy City Hall on Tuesday May 4th, residents Lou Vargas, Reinaldo Aviles, Jorge Cruz and Caroline Pozycki Sr met with Jill Goldy, Perth Amboy's Chief Financial Officer and Hector Bonilla, from Mayor Diaz's Administration, to discuss a number of local government cost cutting proposals developed by the Citizens' Campaign. Perth Amboy municipal and school budgets have suffered major cuts in State aid. The City  is looking for ways to save money without reducing services. After a very constructive dialogue, the residents decided to focus on two measures: first a resolution to establish a Joint Cost Sharing Task Force including residents and representatives of Perth Amboy's School Board and the City Administration. The second is a resolution establishing a City Task Force of residents to provide a series of best practice expense reductions for the city budget.

You can also take the lead in helping your community to find cost savings and cut waste by visiting the Platform for the People and proposing our "Ready for Adoption" model cost savings ordinances. You can learn more by attending the June 9th Summit's Leadership Panel  on Waste Cutting.
