Power For Positive Change - Beyond The Ballot
Call to Service News Wednesday October 7, 2009 Issue 19

Platform for the People Unleashed

The Jersey Call to Service is empowering citizens concerned with fighting rising property taxes.   On Monday morning on NJ 101.5 FM news I invited citizens to answer the Jersey Call to Service and help cut local government waste by posting their own hometown cost cutting ideas on our new online forum called the Platform for the People (read interview transcript).

A little known fact is that most of our tax dollars are spent at the local level. So I'm inviting you to post your ideas for cutting local government waste in the Platform for the People forum, and promising the Citizens' Campaign will help in developing these ideas into adoptable local laws if legally possible.

Our Law and Policy Task Force has helped develop the model anti Pay to Play laws that are used statewide to cut government corruption and waste. The role of the Task Force will also be to select proposals which can be adopted in multiple towns and develop them into model laws so that your ideas can help cut government waste across the state and build a culture of frugality in New Jersey government.

To be accepted for review and development into law, proposals must come from members of the Citizens' Campaign who have agreed to a no blame approach, and who have learned how to build a constructive proposal. Our free Citizen Legislator online course prepares you to  make a constructive proposal and gives insider knowledge in how  to pass your proposal before a governing body. These are tried and true lessons of empowerment designed by citizens with a record of success. We offer these lessons and support because as we change, the political culture changes. Your participation in the leadership of your community matters.

Sincerely,

Harry Pozycki,
Citizens' Campaign Chairman

 Citizen Leader Profile

Paul Gaffney is President of Monmouth University and a board member of the Citizens' Campaign.  He answered the Jersey Call to Service. In January 2009 he made a "constructive proposal" to the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders to empower regular citizens to get involved in the leadership of Monmouth County government. President Gaffney proposed that the Freeholders launch a county Call to Service.

At the county presentation, President Gaffney said, "The recent Presidential election significantly increased people's interest in government and politics, it is time to take this civic rejuvenation and enlist our residents to bring their talent, skill and leadership to the service of Monmouth County and beyond."

All it took was one citizen leader to stand up and speak out and the freeholders were receptive. Last month on September 17th the Monmouth County Freeholders hosted their first Call to Service event, an open forum to highlight service opportunities in county government, particularly on county boards and commissions. The event was attended by over 100 residents (read story). You can launch a Call to Service in your town. For more information contact Lauren at 732-548-9798 x2.
