Power For Positive Change - Beyond The Ballot
Call to Service News Wednesday September 2, 2009 Issue 18

SERVICE BRINGS HOPE

Statistics show that after something like the corruption arrests that recently occurred, a wave of cynicism is unleashed on the public. But, luckily, the Jersey psyche is pretty resilient. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Like in Perth Amboy and Parsipanny NJ. These are places were Citizen Leaders are on the move.

On Aug 11, Perth Amboy Mayor Wilda Diaz, the first Latina mayor in NJ, passed, by executive order, 5 corruption busting laws proposed to her by Citizen Leaders to help Perth Amboy rise above its corrupt past and move forward embracing good clean and open government.(Read Story)

And on Aug 31st, in Parsipanny, Pay to Play reform was passed by the City Council. The proposed reform was initiated through a grassroots petition drive by a Citizen Leader (Read Story)

Change is coming and its bringing hope, because that's what happens when people who care step up and take responsibility.

Members of the Citizens' Campaign are answering the Jersey Call to Service and providing the fresh new leadership that is so drastically needed in our state.

Our Jersey Call to Service goal is 5,000 new citizen leaders over the next 3 years. We are into year one, and have to recruit 500 more new leaders. Have you answered the Call to Service? Do you know someone who you could invite? Stay involved and help us achieve our goals.

Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend.

Sincerely,

Harry Pozycki,
Citizens' Campaign Chairman

 Citizen Leader Profile

Following the arrest and indictment of his long-time Perth Amboy Mayor and Assemblyman, Mark was determined to get involved to stop corruption in his hometown and restore integrity to City Hall.

After attending a Citizens' Campaign Leadership Forum at the Proprietary House in Perth Amboy, knowing that the indicted Mayor was also the local party Chair, Mark decided to apply his knowledge and take his first step. He ran for a local political party committee seat so he could help reform the city party. Mark earned alot of experience and continued to attend public meetings and looked for more leadership opportunities.

People took notice of Mark's activism, particularly the Council President who appointed Mark to the Perth Amboy "Clean and Open Government Committee." The committee was organized to propose reform measures to clean up City Hall. The committee got to work and recommended for adoption several of the Citizens' Campaigns' model government reform laws. On August 12th , Perth Amboy Mayor Diaz embraced 5 of these proposals and signed them into law by executive order!

We can't wait to see what Mark does next!
