Important Medication Recall Information
| |
Liquid formulations of four
infant and children's medications have been recalled by the manufacturer. School
nurses will not administer any affected lots of the four recalled medications -
Tylenol, Motrin, Zyrtec and Benadryl. Parents should check with the School
Nurse to determine if their child's medication is affected and drop off a new
bottle if needed. A list of the recalled medications and lot numbers is available online here. The products were recalled
by the manufacturer, McNeil Consumer Healthcare, because they may not meet
required quality standards. Some products may contain a higher concentration of
the active ingredient than listed; others contain active ingredients that may
not meet internal testing requirements; and others may contain tiny particles.
The Food and Drug Administration says the potential for serious medical events
is remote, but it is important for parents to discontinue use of these
products. Consult your health care
provider or pharmacist for an alternative, or if you believe your child may
have experienced illness because of the recalled medication. Remember, all
medication to be administered at school must be accompanied by a physician's
order. If you have questions,
please contact Gayle Larson, Day School Nurse at 617-559-6140.

Keeping in touch
| We heard from a couple families who never got the automated phone call over the weekend about the water main break and what was happening at the schools as a result. The call was made via ConnectEd, the same service that Newton Public Schools uses for letting us know about delayed school openings in the wintertime. The schools use the phone number you listed as an emergency contact (remember those yellow sheets in the fall?).
If your phone number has changed, or if you have a new number for the school to use, please contact Lori Gandolfo in the Day office (phone number is in the left hand column).

$21 for 21st Century at Day |
Thanks to 120
families who responded to our plea to raise money. Since last
Wednesday, April 28, we have raised over $2,000. BUT, we need more
participation, only 19% of the families have contributed so far. If
you have not donated as yet, there is still time to do your part.
Please contribute now and thank you for your support.
The money you give to the PTO is used in many ways, one of them being Teacher's Grants. Here is what some of the teachers, who received the money, are saying:
Doris Lowy: We are THRILLED! Our World Languages Department sends many, many thanks to the PTO for this generous grant!! All of us --both teachers and students-- will benefit greatly from your wonderful support.
Randy Meyer: Thank
you, thank you, thank you! This is going to tremendously expand access
to technology at Day as well as boost research and technology skills
instruction.
Alicia Tague: We thank you so much for the continued support for our program!
Gary Fox: Bea Maier and I would like to thank the PTO for your generous grant to the music department. The two Macbooks that we purchased will now enable us to integrate GarageBand and Logic Express (two music software programs available only on Apple products) into our classrooms, particularly
the grade 8 music classes. In addition, we are now able to record many
of our students to create a library of student performers here at Day
(students love to hear performances of their peers). I've already used
one such recording (Maple Leaf Rag played by Gabe Montegue ) in the jazz
history unit of our 7th grade music classes. Our next project will be
to record chorus/band rehearsals and use these as an effective form of
feedback for the students.
Jen Sanders: Thank
you so much for awarding the grant for the Library computers. This
will dramatically improve our ability to offer students one-to-one
computing and to infuse21st Century Skills more frequently into our lessons. This is a tremendous boon for the school and for the students. For the full list and details about making your own contribution, see the Day PTO web page to donate online via PayPal or click here to print out the form and send it in with your check.
Remember, the grade-level team with the highest household participation (percentage of team) will win a homemade cookie party!

through Thursday May 6th in the Day Library, 2nd floor
Librarian Randy Meyer will be on hand to make personal recommendations and answer questions. On May 6 the fair will be open in the evening from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm for those of you who would like to shop before attending the 6th grade musical at 7:30 pm. Classes will visit the book fair during classroom periods. Students are also encouraged to come in before and after school.
Parents are welcome any time. You can also purchase a gift certificate for your teacher to add to their classroom collection. This is a great opportunity to buy birthday presents and stock up on summer reading, while helping our school. Can't make it in, but want to participate? Contact Jane Malmberg!
We hope to see you there!
