| Wednesday March 10th |
| Dear Day families,
Thanks to all those parents who attended the the informational meeting on the principal hiring process last night in the Day auditorium.
Jim Marini, Interim Superintendent, and Joe Russo and Gil Lawrence, members of Newton Public Schools' human resources, outlined the process and answered many questions from the parent community. It was very informational and they went over different aspects of the process, the timeline ( described in detail below), and the importance of parent involvement and feedback.
The very first opportunity for parent involvement is to complete a parent survey regarding the role of our new principal. It is anonymous, and the comments go to Gil Lawrence. To complete the survey, click this link. The deadline for completing the survey is Monday March 15th, so please, fill it out soon!
The next place for parent involvement is on the Selection Advisory Committee (SAC), which includes Day staff members, support staff, a middle school principal, and Deputy Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and the Assistant Director for Human Resources. To sum up, this committee develops interview questions, review and rate resumes, interview semifinalists, and suggest finalists; some members of the committee visit finalists' schools. More about the SAC committee is below.

In Dr. Marini's letter that we sent you last Friday ( click here to see the letter), he describes the Selection Advisory Committee's (SAC) role as "advisory to the Superintendent, who will appoint the principal(s). The SAC will engage in a process which will take into consideration the needs of each individual school as it crafts interview questions, chooses candidates for interviews, and suggests finalists to the Superintendent."
Gil Lawrence, assistant director of human resources, describes the time commitment for members of the SAC as follows: "Beyond the three meetings, (3:30-6pm on March 23, March 31, and April 6) and the 2.5 interview days, the rest of the time is reading candidate packages and site visits. I can read the resumes in a day, usually on the weekend. The site visits last approximately two hours on-site."
If you would like to serve on the SAC, please double check that you are available on the days the SAC meets as described in the timeline below. Then, click here to send an email to Day PTO Co-Presidents by this Thursday, March 11, at 5:00 PM. Include a candidate statement up to 300 words, addressing your experience and how you will represent Day school community-at-large on this committee. If necessary, an election using online voting will be held to select the parent representatives. We realize the timeframe is tight, but we need to submit names to Gil Lawrence on March 15th. No member of the PTO board is eligible to participate on the SAC.
We encourage parents representing SPED, ELL, and METCO communities to take advantage of this opportunity and be part of this process. If your child is a member of one of those communities and if you feel comfortable doing so, please indicate that in your email.
Please keep the time commitment, confidentiality of the process, and responsibility of representing Day School as a whole in mind when considering serving on the SAC. | |
