What is a Progressive Dinner?

Time is starting to run out to sign up for this year's Day @ Night Progressive Dinner.   But what is a progressive dinner anyway?

The idea of this type of event is a meal where one progresses from one house/venue to another for each part of the meal - hence the name "progressive dinner."   Our event is a slight variation on that idea.

The Day Progessive Dinner will start with appetizers and drinks at the New Art Center.  When you sign up to attend you're asked to bring with you either an appetizer or dessert so all appetizers will be made/provided by fellow Day parents.

The New Art Center is where you will find out whose home you will be going to for dinner.   Families have volunteered to open to their homes and will be cooking wonderful meals.  In some cases there may be a co-host who will be sharing the cooking and then hosting at one of their homes.  Each host, and co-host if there is one, will determine the number of people that will join them at their respective homes so the number of guests will vary from home to home.  The organizers of this event will determine who is to go to which home.  This affords a great opportunity to get to know people you might not otherwise have the chance to meet.

(When determining which home people will go to we will try to accomodate as best as we can  those with dietary restrictions or pet allergies.)

Once the dinner portion of the event is over, everyone will regroup back at the New Art Center for dessert and coffee.  As with the appetizers, all desserts will be provided by other Day parents.

Other schools in Newton, including Newton North, have had very successful fundraisers like this one.   We expect Day's to be a fun and successful evening as well.  However...

As of this newsletter ticket sales have been slow.    Day @ Night is the PTO's main fundraiser for the year.   Proceeds from this event will help fund teacher grants for books, laboratory equipment, upgrade fitness equipment, pay conference tuitions and the like.  Last year the PTO gave out thousands of dollars in teacher grants.  We'd like to be able to do more of the same this year.

There's still time to sign up!!!   Invitations were mailed out two weeks ago.   If you've misplaced your invitation you can register online via PayPal at the Day PTO website.   Deadline to sign up is Monday, March 1st.

FY11's Budget and School Committee News

The FY11's Budget will be presented on March 1st, 7pm at Day M.S.  The budget will then be deliberated throughout the month of March.
I
The complete schedule of meetings and budget guidelines are available at the Newton Public School website.  The school committee meeting schedule can be obtained online from their website.

One item that will be presented to the School Committee on February 22nd is the findings of a consulting company (Edvocate) which was hired this fall to evaluate our food service costs and operations. After the presentation and evaluation of findings, the NPS school administration will recommend and work with the School Committee on next steps with regard to food service.

FYI -- there is a summary of the most recent School Committee meeting posted on the Newton North PTSO website that you may find interesting reading.
