February Calendar

Thoughts of February break are foremost in the kids' minds, but don't forget these happenings at school!
  • Tuesday 9th - Night of the Stars acoustic night is TONIGHT at 7:30pm
  • Thursday 11th - In the spirit of helping our kids go from Green Day to greener habits, Day will host an Eco Team get together on February 11 at 7:30 in the library.  In an hour you'll learn how to calculate your carbon footprint, reduce it and include your efforts in a city-wide effort to cut back on greenhouse gases.  This will be fun, easy and it will save you money. Prizes will be awarded just for showing up!  Please contact Ramona Hamblin.
  • Monday 15th - Friday 19th - No School
  • Wednesday 23rd - Day School Council at 7:30pm
To see many other school events, including all games for our sports teams, see the school calendar.

Guess who's invited for dinner!
YOU ARE!

Did you get your invitation to Day's 1st Annual Progressive Dinner (aka Day @ Night) on Saturday, March 6th?! It should have arrived in the mail last week, but you can always get the invitation online here.

The dinner will be on Saturday, March 6th (snow date Sunday, March 7th) with everyone gathering together at the New Art Center at 6:30pm for mixing and mingling -- and to get maps to their hosts' houses. Dinner is at 8 and then we'll meet back at the New Art Center for dessert and coffee.

If you have questions, please contact Phyllis, Archana, or Susan
.

Do you have some time to help us with the event? As the mailing crew found out, it was a lot of fun -- and quick work -- to do that task together. We'd be happy to include you in the next round! Just drop us a line.

A note to parents of cast & crew of Sound of Music

Ms. McGettrick is at home with her baby, but she's asked for some help rounding up parent volunteers for the production.

If your child is
in performing in or crew for Sound of Music, could you please take a moment to respond to this volunteer form?! Ms. McG will be eternally grateful -- and the cast and crew will too!

If you're curious about what it takes to put on a show, check out Ms. McGettrick's web page (just click on the chair to read her blog).

8th Grade Parents

It's time for you and your children to start planning for their freshman year at the new Newton North!

The following documents outline the steps and the time frame for the registration process.
You may want to sign up to receive emails from the Newton North PTSO. To do so, go to their website, click About the PTSO, and select Stay Informed.

There are quite a few nifty things going on at North -- here's just one!  Did you know that there are students and faculty at Newton North trying to create a Mobile Algae Lab? This was proposed by the Greengineers who visited Day for Green Day last week). They are in the running for a grant from Pepsi! Winning depends on the number of votes, so please consider voting for the Greengineers!

Superintendent Search

The search consultants from Hazard, Young and Attea (HYA), a leading search firm with a nationwide track record of successfully hiring school superintendents, will present the final three Superintendent candidates to the School Committee on February 16, 2010 at 8:30 am in the Frazier Room, 100 Walnut St.

Each candidate will spend an entire day in the district on February 23, 24 and 25. His/her day will begin with a televised School Committee interview from 8:30-10:00 am, followed by school visits, meetings with administrators, a 4:00-5:30 pm session with the Search Committee, and a televised Community Forum in the Day Middle School auditorium from 7:30-9:00 pm.  All are invited to attend the open sessions or tune in on NewTV.  Written feedback forms will be available at all sessions and/or comments can be sent to: schoolcommittee@newton.k12.ma.us.

On February 26th, the School Committee will convene in open session at 8:30 am to deliberate and decide on a preferred candidate.  This will be followed by a site visit and salary/contract negotiations with the offer finalized at the end of March.  If the School Committee is unable to decide on February 26th, a revised process will be developed for moving forward.

For questions, please contact Search Committee co-chair Reenie Murphy.

FY11 Budget and School Committee News

On December 14, 2009 the School Committee voted to approve the FY10 Budget Guidelines. A preliminary budget discussion is scheduled for February 22, 2010 during the regular School Committee meeting.

The Superintendent will present the FY11 Budget on March 1, 2010 at 7:00 PM at Day. The budget will be deliberated during the month of March.

The complete schedule of meetings and budget guidelines are available at the Newton Public School website.  The school committee meeting schedule can be obtained online from their website.

Another item that will be presented to the School Committee on February 22nd is the findings of a consulting company (Edvocate) which was hired this fall to evaluate our food service costs and operations. After the presentation and evaluation of findings, the NPS school administration will recommend and work with the School Committee on next steps with regard to food service.

FYI -- there is a summary of the most recent School Committee meeting posted on the Newton North PTSO website that you may find interesting reading.

Warmly,

Archana, Phyllis, & Susan
