September 15, 2009
Dear Day families,

Okay, big sigh of relief. We've made it through the first days of school. And we're getting used to whether it's day 1, day 2, or day 3. (If you're not sure, check out the school calendar.)

Great to see so many of you at the Back-to-School picnic last week and at the new parent coffee yesterday. If you weren't able to come, never fear, there are other ways to reconnect with old friends and make new ones. Not sure how to do that?! Pop us an email, we'll help you find a way

We wanted to thank those parents who really went above and beyond to help out during a particularly busy first week of school:
  • For the Teacher Appreciation Lunch: Nancy Brown, Lisa Conti, Harry Sanders, Amy Siegel, Alison Montague, Meryl Kessler, Mary Beth DeNucci, Benita Danzig, Bonnie Southworth, Lisa Gianelly, Ami Gordon, Judy Close, Annette Seaward, Cindy, Betsy S, Kitty, Boris, and Shaw's for their gift certificate
  • For the Back to School Picnic: Dana Davis, Martha Hadeler, Mary Beth DeNucci, Mary Greco, Gina Mulvaney, Tracy Martin, Merle Bicknell
  • and all of you who brought desserts to the picnic (in particular that kind baker-mom who brought brownies warm from the oven and walked around, passing them out of the pan -- they were FAB!)

If we missed thanking you -- our apologies!

Seasonal influenza flu vaccine

From Gayle Larson, RN
F.A. Day Middle School Nurse

As we did last year, we will be offering flu vaccine to all students here at Day. Both the intranasal flu vaccine (FluMistŪ) and the flu shot will be available to students during the school day in October. A fee will be charged for the vaccine. For more information and for consent forms, click these links:
Especially for New Parents

If you couldn't make the morning coffee yesterday, you might be interested in the evening meeting on Wednesday evening September 16th. It will give you a chance to meet Gina Healy, school principal, and other school administrators. Question and answer session. 7:30 - 8:30pm in the school library on the 2nd floor. Phyllis, Archana, and Susan, the PTO Co-Presidents will be there too. Come on over and say hi!

Parents should park on Albermarle Road (near Gath Pool) and follow the path to the main entrance of the school. This is the same path that the kids take when the busses drop them off in the morning. Please allow plenty of time!

The library is on the 2nd floor. Using the school main entrance go to 2nd floor, turn left from staircase, down hallway - library will be on your right.

The doors by the flagpole on Minot Place are not the main entrance and may be locked. If so, follow the dragon prints on the sidewalk around to the school's main entrance.
Tip for using Google Calendar

A parent wrote in ".... in the link below please find some directions I found about syncing Google Calendars.  It has more options than required - but it helped me.  (With the Day PTO calendar I exported a CSV file and then imported the file into my personal Google calendar)."

Link to directions on how to sync the Google Calendar.

Let us know if this is helpful!

Overview of Newton's Middle School and High School Special Education
Programs
Monday September 21 at Education Center

Judy Levin-Charns, Ed.D., Assistant Superintendent of Student Services in the Newton Public Schools will present an overview of Newton's inclusion programs, integrated classes, and alternative classroom programs for 2009 - 2010, including a new alternative high school program. The meeting is in room 210 of the Education Center, 100 Walnut St., Newtonville. Come at 7:15pm for light refreshments and networking; the meeting begins at 7:30pm.

This is the first year that the entire September meeting will focus on middle and high school programs, allowing more time for discussion. A similiar program focusing on preschool and elementary school will take place on Monday, October 5th.

This free presentation is sponsored by the Newton Parent Advisory Council for Special Education. For more information or to join our online discussion group, please email info@newtonpac.org. If you also have a child in preschool or elementary school, come to our next meeting on Monday, October 5th.
Student/family directories

Thanks to everyone who has checked their contact information for the school directory. We'll be following up with those families we haven't heard from - and those families whose email addresses are bouncing!

Remember, free directories are automatically given to incoming 6th grade and new families. If you'd like to order a directory for $10, just go to the Day web site for directions.

If your email or contact information changes over the school year, please let the school office know -- and go to the Day PTO web site and enter your email address in the Enter or Update Your Directory Information box.
Warmly,

Archana Vahalia, Susan Cassidy, & Phyllis Attisano
