Welcome to 6th grade at Day!

Hi there --

We're sending this email out to you, families who will have a 6th grader at Day next year. (If that's not you or if your child is not attending Day), please accept our apologies and feel free to opt out!)

We're the new co-presidents at Day, and we're looking forward to meeting more of you all. In a nutshell we are:
  • Phyllis Attisano, mom to Charles (8th grade) and Will (6th grade)
  • Archana Vahalia, mom to recent Newton North graduate Rohan and Annika (6th grade)
  • Susan Cassidy, mom to Ned (8th grade) and Kate (6th grade)
But enough about us!
First things first: get out your calendars and be sure to take note of the ice cream social on Thursday Sept 3rd and the first day of school on Tuesday September 8th (see the events notice to the left).

The ice cream social is a kid-only event (sorry, no siblings, no parents) where the 6th graders have the school to themselves. This is so they can figure out where their homeroom is, where various other rooms are, eyeball the locker room, and so on. :)  The teachers and staff will be there to show the kids around -- and to scoop ice cream. Please try to have your child attend; it will really help his or her transition.

We know not *everyone* is on email, and the school sends out  a packet towards the end of August -- among other things it'll have an invitation to the ice cream social and other things of interest such as your child's team assignment (have the kids started asking you about that yet?), bus info, lunch, and PTO information.

If you haven't already found these web sites, you may want to check them out:
 Check your directory listing

FYI, in middle school there are very few printed flyers that come home. You'll get most of your information via email with updates from us and from Principal Gina Healy (yup, she sends the occasional email newsletter!) -- and from the Daytime (the student newspaper). If you're reading this note, it means that we have your information for those emails -- and for the directory, which we publish in the fall.

If you could, would you please check your information? A very lovely parent, Alice Cunningham, has kindly volunteered to organize the directory and get it ready for printing. It would make her day if you could check your information. And, it will make connecting with other parents and kids at Day that much easier.

We use Constant Contact, an email distribution system, so that you can manage your own information at any time. To check your information that appears in the directory:
  1. Scroll to the bottom of this email
  2. Click on the link "Update Profile/Email Address"
  3. And then follow the instructions
  4. Please feel free to use the notes section if you have any questions, want to opt out of getting email from us & Ms. Healy, but do want the email listed in the directory, etc.

You can also go to the Day PTO web site and enter your email address in the Enter or Update Your Directory Information box.

If you have 7th or 8th graders, please add them as Student 2 or Student 3. (It doesn't matter what order the kids appear in.)

Sound easy?! Go do it! :)

 Superintendent Search

The deadline has been extended for submitting applications for membership on the Superintendent Search Committee until Friday, August 7, 2009. This is an incredible opportunity for educators, students and community members to work together to help shape the future of the Newton Public Schools. All interested administrators, teachers, high school students and community members are strongly encouraged to apply and will be given full consideration for a spot on the committee.  We are looking for a balanced group with diverse perspectives and a varied expertise.

Details can be found here. School Committee members Reenie Murphy and Claire Sokoloff have been named as co-chairs of the search committee. If you have any questions at all about your eligibility or the key responsibilities, please feel free to contact Claire or Reenie.
School supplies

While school may be the last thing the kids are thinking about, the sixth grader teachers are already thinking about the list of school supplies that your child will need. One of the items you will not have to purchase is a plan book (assignment notebook). During the first days of school, every student at Day is given a plan book, complete with a school calendar(!).

Some parents have asked what school supplies the sixth graders will need. The sixth graders are divided into four teams, and the list varies slightly by team. Until you get your child's team assignment later in August, you won't know exactly what school supplies to get. (Make sense!?) If you are so compelled, you can get an idea of the items you will need to purchase for 6th grade here. BUT remember, you don't yet know what team your child is on

In case you're really curious, here's the list of stuff your children will need, regardless of their team:

2 1.5 inch, 3-ring binders (no trappers)
8 dividers with tabs
2 packs loose leaf graph paper
pencils*

*Day is a latex-free school. Please keep this in mind when you are purchasing pencils for your favorite 6th graders.

Generally, you'll need to get all the school supplies by the end of the first week of school.

Got older kids at Day? Here's the 7th grade list and the 8th grade list -- we're sending out an email to those grades shortly. We just wanted to give you the biggest heads up. :)
Got questions? Ask away!
Warmly,

Archana Vahalia, Susan Cassidy, & Phyllis Attisano
