Conference on Corporate Communication 2009
 Winning the Academic Best Paper Award were: (left to right) Augustine Pang, Ph.D., Namrata Bansal, (Wim Elving, Ph.D., editor of Corporate Communications: An International Journal and award presenter) and Joanna Siah Ann Mei from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore for "New Media - A New Medium in Escalating Crises?." Other award winners were: Fred Robins, University of Adelaide, Australia (Best Paper - Practice) for "Learning from Corporate Mistakes;" N. Leila Trapp, Aalborg University, Denmark (Highly Commended Paper - Academic) for "The Persuasive Strength of Values, Reputation and Interest Arguments for Promoting Ethical Behavior in a Global Corporate Setting;" and Roger W. Hutt, Ph.D., Arizona State University (Highly Commended Paper - Practice) for "Mapping Apparent Stakeholders."

CCI's International Practices & Trends Research continues to be a priority. The 2009 U.S. study is now underway. If you were invited to participate please do so now and help us take a current snapshot of our profession. The E.U. study continues under the leadership of Prof. Finn Frandsen and Dr. Winni Johansen, Aarhus University in collaboration with Dr. Peggy Brĝnn at the Norwegian School of Management. The final study will include six countries: the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Dr. Roslyn Petelin of Queensland University is leading the effort to conduct a study in Australia and New Zealand. Meanwhile, Dr. Michael B. Goodman, CCI, in collaboration with our colleagues Dr. Daniel So, Dr. Doreen Wu, and Patrick Ng of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, has visited new contacts in China to expand on our previous two research efforts in Greater China.
CCI Rings "The Opening Bell"SM , at the New York Stock Exchange,
January 16 in conjunction with the 2009 Leaders Forum's site visit to the NYSE Euronext. Thank you's to Raymond Pellechia, Managing Director of Communication and Annmarie Gioia, Senior Media Relations Specialist. This was the Leaders Forum's eight visit, beginning in 2001.
Dr. Krishna S. Dhir received the Decisions Sciences Institute's highest award last November - the Dennis E. Grawoig Distinguished Service Award for "his extraordinary dedication and service to the Institute and its members for over three decades..." (From award citation). Dhir is a member of CCI's Board of Advisors and has attended every CCI conference since its inception. We also applaud his extraordinary contribution and congratulate him on his well deserved recognition from his peers. He is the Henry Gund Professor of Management at Berry College, USA and served for many years as the Dean of its Campbell School of Business. Previous to his academic career, he had over 13 years of cumulative corporate experience, acquired with BioStar Medical Products, Inc., CIBA-GEIGY AG (now Novartis), and Borg-Warner Chemicals' International Division.
Dr. Michael B. Goodman, CCI Director, has been an invited speaker in the U.S. and abroad. On February 16 in Gebze, Turkey, at the invitation of Tübitak (The Scientific and Technological Research Council) and Tübitak Tüsside (Turkish Institute for Industrial Management), Goodman spoke on "Understanding Business Cultures Globally." On February 23 in New York City his theme was "Global Corporate Communication in a Time of Crisis" for the American Business Forum on Europe. On April 8 Dr. Goodman gave a lecture at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University entitled "Corporate Communication Post 9/15." Lectures followed at the University of International Business and Edelman Public Relations, Beijing, China and at Sun Yat Sen University and Guandong University, Guangzhou, China. The trip also included meetings with practitioners and academics from leading professional and academic organizations. In early July Dr. Goodman was a Visiting Professor at Aarhus University, Denmark.
CCI Executive Briefings and Symposia since January have featured Dr. Alison Holmes, currently the Keller Fellow of Transatlantic Studies at Yale University, on "Business as Usual? The U.S. Presidential Election & the Transatlantic Business Agenda;" Dick Martin, retired EVP of public relations, employee communications and brand management for AT&T, debuted his new book Secrets of the Marketing Masters; and CCI's annual Symposium on Reputation was held at Pfizer Inc in association with CCM - Council of Communication Management covering the theme "Trust Me? Rebuilding Business Credibility" with panelists James E. Murphy, PR Coalition Chair and Chairman & CEO of Murphy & Co.; Matthew J. Harrington, President & CEO of Edelman US; Stephen R. Dishart, Managing Director of Communications and Human Resources for Swiss Re America Holding Corporation; Douglas G. Pinkham, President of the Public Affairs Council; and Jeffrey D. Morgan, President & CEO of the National Investor Relations Institute. The event's host was John P. Santoro, Vice President, Stakeholder Communications at Pfizer and the panel moderator was Tracy Benson Kirker, Managing Partner, On the Same Page & Past President, CCM. Upcoming Events September 23 / 6:00pm-8:00pm at Baruch: Roger Bolton, Senior Counselor, APCO Worldwide and Past President, Arthur W. Page Society, will speak on the society's new report co-authored with the Business Round Table Institute for Corporate Integrity, "The Dynamics of Public Trust in Business -- Emerging Opportunities for Leaders," offered in association with the Robert Zicklin Center for Corporate Integrity, Baruch College/CUNY.
November 6 / 8:30am-2:00pm: "Sustainability and the Mega-City," sponsored by the Robert Zicklin Center for Corporate Integrity in association with CCI, will look at the role of business in specific issues of sustainability and infrastructure: water, power, and real estate. Details to follow.
January 12-16 / New York City: The 2010 Corporate Communication Leaders Forum, CCI's intensive professional and academic experience in the current theory and practice of corporate communication combining presentations, panel discussions, case studies, site visits, and interaction with leading professionals and scholars. The Forum is intended for corporate communication professionals who have moved beyond functional responsibilities into greater leadership roles.
June 4-7 / Wroxton, England: Conference on Corporate Communication 2010, CCI's three-day global conference serving as a bridge between practitioners and scholars, providing a collegial environment in an historic, picturesque setting to dialogue on relevant issues facing the profession. Of particular interest for the 2010 conference are papers, research, case studies, and proposals on the evolving relationships between corporations and stakeholders in the wake of the global financial crisis of 2008-2009.
