The Power of Prayer
praying hands

Advent Wreath Prayer

Week One:
The first candle is lit, and the prayer for the firs.t week is said:

Stir up Thy might, we beg Thee, O Lord,
and come, so that we may escape through
Thy protection
and be saved by Thy help from the dangers
that threaten us
because of our sins.
Who livest and reignest for ever and ever.

Week Two:
Two candles are lit on the second Sunday and allowed to burn as before.

O Lord, stir up our hearts that we may prepare for Thy only begotten Son, that through His coming
we may be made
worthy to serve Thee with pure souls.
Through the same
Christ our Lord.

Week Three:
Three candles, including the rose candle, are lit on Gaudete, the third Sunday, and during
that week.

We humbly beg
Thee, O Lord, to
listen to our prayers;
and by the grace
of Thy coming
bring light into our darkened minds.
Who livest and reignest for ever and ever.

Week Four:
All four candles are lit on the fourth Sunday and allowed to burn as before.

Stir up Thy might,
we pray Thee,
O Lord, and come;
rescue us through Thy great strength so that salvation, which has been hindered by our sins, may be hastened by the grace of
Thy gentle mercy.
Who livest and reignest for ever and ever.

Pen Pals For Students
pen pals
We have two new students and I am trying to find pen pals for them!

Do you know of any older (12-16 year olds) that would be interested in becoming a pen pal?

It takes only about 15 - 30 minutes a month to write a letter and return it to the church.

Usually in April we go to the farm where we have a hayride, picnic, scavenger hunt, roast marshmallows for smores, see horses, cows, and chickens - it's very fun for us and for the students and we get to meet our pen pals at that time.

Any suggestions you may have will be very much appreciated!

Yours in Christ,
Barbara Williams

Epiphany Pagenet

Details:
Rehearsals - children's chapel during month of Dec., Performance - Sunday Jan. 6th 10:30 service
History:
In the story of the Epiphany, as related in the gospel of Matthew, "three wise men from the east" visited the baby Jesus in Bethlehem on the twelfth day following his birth. January 6 became the day appointed by the Church to celebrate the revelation of Christ's divinity to mankind. In the 4th century,  the western world's most influential preacher, St. Augustine, romanticized and embellished the story of the Epiphany. The gift-bearing wise men became "kings," and Feast of the Epiphany, the twelfth day of Christmas, evolved into a major holiday imbued with royal associations.
Prayer:
Father of light, unchanging God, today you reveal to men of faith the resplendent fact of the Word made flesh. Your light is strong, Your love is near; draw us beyond the limits which this world imposes, to the life where Your Spirit makes all life complete. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Visit from St. Nicholas
Sunday Dec. 7th

History: Nicholas was born during the third century in the village of Patara. His wealthy parents, who raised him to be a devout Christian, died in an epidemic while Nicholas was still young. Obeying Jesus' words to "sell what you own and give the money to the poor,"

Nicholas used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering. He dedicated his life to serving God and was made Bishop of Myra while still a young man. Bishop Nicholas became known throughout the land for his generosity to the those in need, his love for children, and his concern for sailors and ships.

Prayer of St. Nicholas: God of joy and cheer, we thank you for your servant, the good bishop Nicholas. In loving the poor, he showed us your kindness; in caring for your children, he revealed your love. Make us thoughtful without need of reward so that we, too, may be good followers of Jesus.

Internet Safety

The Catawba County Parenting Network (a program of Catawba County Schools) is sponsoring an upcoming event that may be of interest to parents in your congregation.

A representative of Attorney Roy Cooper's office will be at the CVCC auditorium in Hickory on Tuesday, December 9th at 6:30 p.m. to present an Internet Safety Seminar. The presentation, for parents of children 8 to 15, will feature a video and free copies of a parent resource guide.

The Internet (and social networking sites like MySpace) play an important role in the lives of many young people. Technology can provide many benefits, but it can also leave young people vulnerable to serious dangers.

Registration for the program is very much appreciated. Folks can call the Parenting Network at 828-465-8151 to register for this free event.

Thank you in advance for your assistance in informing parents of this beneficial seminar.

Kind regards,
