Visit from St. Nicholas
Details: Sunday Dec. 7th
History: Nicholas was born during
the third century in the village of Patara. His wealthy parents,
who raised him to be a devout Christian, died in an epidemic while
Nicholas was still young. Obeying Jesus' words to "sell what you own
and give the money to the poor," Nicholas used his whole inheritance to
assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering. He dedicated his life to
serving God and was made Bishop of Myra while still a young man. Bishop Nicholas became known throughout the
land for his generosity to the those in need, his love for children,
and his concern for sailors and ships.
Prayer of St. Nicholas: God of joy and cheer, we thank you for your servant, the good bishop
Nicholas. In loving the poor, he showed us your kindness; in caring for
your children, he revealed your love. Make us thoughtful without need
of reward so that we, too, may be good followers of Jesus.
Epiphany Pagenet
Details: Rehearsals - children's chapel during month of Dec., Performance - Sunday Jan. 6th 10:30 service History: In
the story of the Epiphany, as related
in the gospel of Matthew, "three
wise men from the east" visited the
baby Jesus in Bethlehem on the twelfth
day following his birth. January 6 became the day appointed
by the Church to celebrate the revelation
of Christ's divinity to mankind.In
the 4th century,
the western world's most influential
preacher, St. Augustine, romanticized
and embellished the story of the Epiphany.
The gift-bearing wise men became "kings,"
and Feast of the Epiphany, the twelfth
day of Christmas, evolved into a major
holiday imbued with royal associations. Prayer: Father
of light, unchanging God, today you reveal to men of faith the
resplendent fact of the Word made flesh. Your light is strong, Your
love is near; draw us beyond the limits which this world imposes, to
the life where Your Spirit makes all life complete. We ask this through
Christ our Lord. Amen. |

Presiding Bishop, The Most Reverend Katharine
Jefferts Schori, with the youth at Convention
 |
How wonderful
it was to have our Presiding Bishop, The Most Reverend Katharine
Jefferts Schori, with us at Convention. Our intention was to have as
many people encounter her as possible as well as to give her some sense
of the variety of ministries going on in the diocese. She went to Boone
Thursday morning for a large gathering at St. Luke's. There she had a
dialog with ASU students and heard about the transformative ministry
going on at Hospitality House, a halfway house for the homeless seeking
to transform their lives. She met with the clergy of the diocese for
lunch at the Cathedral and then met folks from Church of the Advocate
in Asheville as well as the vestry of Trinity and the mayor of
Asheville. At Kanuga, we used every meal for her to be with a distinct
group: dinner with seminarians, breakfast with The Living Stones
Society, lunch with La Capilla in Hendersonville, and Friday dinner
with the Youth Council.
I was once more amazed at her composure and depth. Having seen her at
the House of Bishops' meetings, I knew that she does not get ruffled
easily, but I marveled at her ability to shift gears and continue to be
the center of calm. My own sense is that her gift to us is that
ministry of presence. I said in one of my many introductions of her
that as a pilot she has the gift of perspective and as an oceanographer
she has plumbed the depths. Perhaps that is why her way of being is an
echo of Julian of Norwich's words: "All will be well and all manner of
things will be well."
When I went to my first House of Bishops' meeting, the 25th Presiding
Bishop, Frank Tracy Griswold III gave me a plaque that hangs in my
office. It has these words from St. Augustine: "For you I am a bishop,
but with you I am a Christian; one is an office, accepted; the other is
gift, received. One is danger, the other is safety. If I am happier to
be redeemed with you than to be placed over you, then I shall, as the
Lord commanded, be more fully your servant." At the end of the day, we
are all pilgrims on this journey to Christ as we travel with Christ.
Bishops have specific tasks, but they are called to be redeemed by the
love of Jesus Christ as one of the baptized. Leaders in the Church must
be grounded in that essential calling.
I am pleased so many people were able to meet our Presiding Bishop, but I am more pleased that she is our Presiding Bishop.
