US Access Board to
Undertake Rulemaking on Classroom Acoustics
Poor
classroom acoustics impact learning for all children, but the effects are
pronounced for those with hearing loss, speech or learning impairments, and
those who learn English as a second language. At a recent meeting, the Board
unanimously voted to undertake rulemaking to address acoustics in classrooms by
referencing a voluntary consensus standard that was developed with support from
the Board. More information can be found
at http://www.access-board.gov/acoustic/index.htm.
The US Access
Board's Lois Thibault will be conducting a special session about acoustics in
public places at the 2010 Disability Access Conference on September 8, 2010
from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. This special afternoon session is free.
REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. For this special afternoon session
only, registration will remain open until September 7, 2010 and must be sent to
Mona Higa at DCAB. For more information about this session or to register
please contact Mona Higa at (808) 586-8121 or via email at mona.higa@doh.hawaii.gov.
