U.S. Access Board Issues Guidance on Accessible Pedestrian Signals

Ped SignalThe Board has recently released new guidance on installation of accessible pedestrian signals to provide better access to pedestrians with vision impairments.  The signals are based on the 'Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices' and  includes specifications for accessible pedestrian signals which have been derived from recommendations developed by a former Board advisory panel, the Public Rights-of-Way Access Advisory Committee.  The publication also explains important considerations in the placement and orientation of signal devices and low-volume indicators of current products to ensure proper installation essential for signals to be effective.  Case studies and field evaluations are provided to illustrate various installation 'do's and don'ts' in relation to common site conditions and factors.  The publication, which includes an installation checklist, is available on the Board's website at

FAQ - ADAAG

ADAAG DOORS 4.13

Q: ADAAG figure 25 (a) appears to permit latch-side clearance on an out swinging door with a front approach to be zero dimensions. Is this correct?

A: Yes, if the door has only a latch or a closer, but not both, the "X" dimension may be zero.
