"Making Life Accessible Through Technology" Wrap-Up
Thank
you to all who attended the Making Life Accessible Through Technology

The conference was well attended. The Assistive Technology Resource Center (ATRC) of Hawaii and Disability and Communication Access Board would like to thank and acknowledge all our home modification workshop presenters. They gave their time and shared their expertise and experiences in the hopes that you gained a little more knowledge about modifying a home for accessibility. "Making Life Accessible Through Technology"
Chaminade University Student Design Awards
ATRC and DCAB entered into an
exciting project with the students of Chaminade University's Interior
Design Program. Each of the 12 senior students were given an
assignment to re-design a muti-generational house to make it more
accessible and useable to the occupants, including a person with a
disability and an aging parent. "Universal
Design" principles and aging in place concepts were incorporated into
the project to meet the variety of needs spanning the lifetime of the
residents. Additionally, material finish, furniture, and equipment
selections were to demonstrate an understanding of environmental
stewardship. In
addition to being given a grade by their professor, the students'
projects were reviewed by a panel of three community judges (Ron Awa,
AIA, representing the architectural community; Nancy Schur, ASID,
representing the interior design community; and Gary Batcheller,
Facility Access Specialist representing DCAB). The students displayed their
projects at the June 2, 2009 Making Life Accessible Through Technology Conference. The public was allowed to "vote" for their favorite design. All students were honored at the June 2
Conference with plaques and monetary prizes provided by the ATRC. DCAB
wishes to express our sincere mahalo to Joan Riggs, Director of the
Chaminade program, for making this project successful. We also thank
our judges for their time and expertise. It is DCAB's hope that this
"exercise" will make upcoming design students more aware of
accessibility as they enter their design careers. ATRC and DCAB would like to congratulate and acknowledge the following winners of the awards:
Judge's Design Award - 1st Place Tina Moore Judge's Design Award - 2nd Place Deanna Itano Judge's Design Award - 3rd Place Ashley Halemano Judge's Design Award - Honorable Mention Elizabeth Burgin People's Choice Award Tina Moore & Ashley Halemano |
