DOJ Issues Notices to Adopt New ADA Standards

On June 17, 2008, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) issued proposals to adopt new design standards for facilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act based on the Access Board's Americans with Disabilities Act and Architectural Barrier Act Accessibility Guidelines.  The new standards would apply to State and local government facilities subject to Title II of the ADA and to places of public accommodation and commercial facilities covered by Title III of the law.  The Department is seeking public comment on specific issues, such as accessible routes to stages, dispersion of accessible hospital rooms, and scoping for places of lodging.  Comments are due by August 18, 2008.  The proposals are available at: http://www.ada.gov/NPRM2008/ADAnprm08.htm
