Access Board's Accessible PROW Planning & Designing for Alterations
  PROW Cover
A new design guide on achieving accessibility in alterations projects involving public streets and sidewalks is now available. Accessible Public Rights-of-Way: Planning and Designing for Alterations, published by the Institute of Transportation Engineers with support from the Board, explains how to maximize accessibility in the course of alterations through careful planning, an understanding of current regulations and access criteria, and strategies for negotiating constraints. The guide outlines and illustrates 25 design solutions, models sidewalks by right-of-way width, and includes case studies and other resources. More information about this document can be viewed at
Access Board's Accessible PROW

DCAB was one of 27 national members who served on the U.S. Access Board's Public Rights of Way (PROW) Committee. DCAB staff also served on the Working
Group to provide input on this alterations manual, with editorial review and comment from DCAB's Executive Director and Facility Access Unit Staff.  Hawaii is one of the few states with a state level review process for ADAAG, and thus DCAB staff was able to make contributions and offer suggestions from the perspective of a review agency based on its many years of reviewing
county and state curb ramp and other public rights-of-way projects under state law, H.R.S. 103-50.

FAQ / Common ADA Errors
  Conference Announcement
Accessible Route - Parking

Error/Omission:
The built-up curb ramp projects into the access aisle.

The accessible parking space and access aisle is not level in all directions.

Result:
When an access aisle has a sloped surface, a wheelchair may roll away from a car or van preventing the wheelchair user from getting out of the vehicle. The sloped surface also prevents a van-mounted wheelchair lift from being fully-lowered to the access aisle surface.

Requirement:
4.6.3* Parking Spaces. ...Parking spaces and access aisles shall be level with surface slopes not exceeding 1:50 (2%) in all directions.

*Asterisk denotes that related, non-mandatory material is in the Appendix to the Standards.
