Current Interpretive Opinions In January the Standing Committee on Facility Access ruled on one Interpretive Opinion, which apply to buildings and facilities subject to HRS 103-50, regarding transfer showers:
ADAAG Section 4.21.2 Size and Clearance. In pre-existing conditions, a 1-1/2" gap can be provided between the 36" by 36" shower stall and the 36" by 48" clear floor space (transfer area) fronting the transfer-type shower stall in order to keep soapy rinse water from ponding in the transfer area and creating a potentially unsafe condition in alterations only. 2008 Disability Access Conference
This year's conference will feature as the luncheon keynote speaker: John L. Wodatch, Chief, Disability Rights Section, Civil Rights Division, U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Wodatch is a civil rights attorney with over 30 years experience with the Federal Government, specializing in the rights of persons with disabilities. He is Chief of the Disability Rights Section in the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, responsible for enforcement of Titles I, II and III of the Americans with Disabilities Act. He will also present two, one-hour sessions on the latest cases and rulings regarding facility access in Title II and Title III facilities and places of accommodation.

2008 Accessible Design Awards
This
year's 'Call for Entries' is now available on the Disability &
Communication Access Board's website. The goal of the awards program is
to recognize buildings and facilities within the State of Hawaii that
are not only accessible but also enhance the entire user experience.

FAQ / Common ADA Errors
Accessible Route - Exterior
Error/Omission: The pedestrian routes on a site from public passenger loading zones, and public streets and sidewalks to the accessible entrance(s) are not accessible.
Result: People with disabilities cannot travel from the site entry points to the accessible entrance(s). In some cases, people must use vehicular routes which can be dangerous.
Requirement: 4.1.2 (1) At least one accessible route complying with 4.3 shall be provided within the boundary of the site from public transportation stops, accessible parking spaces, passenger loading zones if provided, and public streets or sidewalks, to an accessible building entrance.
