Cheremoya Elementary School & Cheremoya Foundation

Cheremoya Elementary School is fast becoming one of the finest in the district, and  The Cheremoya Foundation (CF), founded 2009, has launched what it calls "The Cheremoya Movement" for academic year 2012/2013 and beyond. The term encapsulates the momentum that is afoot, which matches up area-wide enrollment, with current school achievement, with total school potential and vision.

Updated Cheremoya API (academic performance index) has just been released at 845, a truly significant 27-point increase from the prior year. It is the highest score to date, and a testament to just how skilled the school's teachers are (average tenure 17 years), and to the well-mannered and anxious-to-learn group of students now attending (maximum capacity 320). Some of Hollywood's most gifted children attend Cheremoya. Last spring the 5th Grade Math Team won the Gold Medal in Problem Solving at the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) Math Field Day.
Learning is Fun!

CF (a recognized 501 C 3) has worked diligently to organize itself efficiently, from board to committees, from room-parents to volunteers. This incorporates existing school structure with that of its booster club, allowing for the best communication mechanism in addressing current needs, and most importantly, getting those needs met quickly. It is also a very comforting structure for local volunteers who may join and/or donate to the team, which best suits their interests.

The school welcomes its new principal this fall in Michelle Gorsuch (Masters UCLA, 18 years LAUSD). Particularly exciting about this hire was the school-based-management (SBM) approach implemented by Board Member Steve Zimmer and Director Autri Streeck. A committee of teachers, admin and parents was assembled to vet all candidates and to make the final selection - a process that is an LAUSD trend to be certain, and one that empowers stakeholders in such a vital decision. Michelle looks to be highly visible and effective, both on campus for the children and staff, and in our community in general.

Cheremoya is OUR neighborhood school, and if it excites local residents to join The Movement, to simply walk down the hill each day and drop off their children, to watch a school not just transform, but become fully recognized for what it is and what it will be, to have their children in an atmosphere that promotes nothing short of excellence, safety and caring, then Cheremoya is your obvious local choice. Our students, our community, and our home values, deserve it - now, and well into the future.

New Navigation Sending People INTO Our Neighborhood!

Starting now, all Apple iPhones, iPods, and iPads have a new map program that directs people into our neighborhood. Google Maps is no longer available on Apple products.

When you buy a new iPhone or iPad or upgrade the software on an old one, you will lose Google Maps and get Apple Maps. Apple Maps will send you up Deronda or Mulhholland Hwy (depending on your location), then onto the closed fire roads. What's worse is now all iPhones and iPads with the new software will not only give directions but will now give full turn-by-turn navigation, just like a regular GPS System in a car.

What Neighbors Should Do NOW!

It's time the neighborhood makes some noise over at Apple:

Write a letter ASAP urging Apple to fix this quickly (and not at the company's leisure).

Here is the email address of the key executive in charge:

"Scott Forstall" <forstall@apple.com>

If you'd like to phone in and express your dismay, the number is 408-996-1010. When you get to an operator, ask for Scott Forstall or anyone in his team. Know that, by calling Scott, you're going to the top. He may be very busy doing damage control after such a huge misstep by the Apple team that he leads.

(Thanks goes to neighbor Louis for the heads up!)

Frank Andrina - We Will Miss Him!

Frank Andrina was born on February 18, 1929 and left us on July 16, 2012. He was born in Florence, California.

He would often say that he was born in Florence and went to Venice on the weekends.

He attended Chonaurds Art Institution and started doing animation at Disney in 1954 working on Lady and the Tramp and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea's ocean and fish scenes.

He moved on continuing to work for animation studios. He worked for many years at Hanna Barbarra on a multitude of animated series such as The Flintstones, Beatles TV shows, Jetsons, and Scooby Doo, just to name a few. His last years were spent at Warner Brothers working on the Justice League, Spiderman and others. (For more details on his career, go to imdb.com)

He was a fencer and a collector of antique arms and armor. He studied ancient bronze and metals and was a true Renaissance man. He was often called the "most chivalrous man in Hollywood".

Frank moved to Rodgerton in Hollywoodland in 1957 and served on the board of the Hollywoodland Homeowners Association in the 70's.

He will be missed by his wife, Barbee, his step-children David and Michelle and, most of all his 3 grandsons, James III, Chance & Vaughn.

Stroke Identification

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within three hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke. He said the trick was having a stroke recognized, diagnosed and then getting the patient medically cared for within three hours, which is tough.

Recognizing a stroke:

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Doctors say that a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S - Ask the individual to SMILE.
T - Ask the person to talk, to speak a simple sentence coherently (i.e. It is sunny out today).
R - Ask the person to raise both arms.

NOTE: Another sign of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out their tongue. If the tongue is crooked, if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

If he or she has trouble with any one of these tasks, call 911 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

Argyle Civic Says Vote YES on Measure HH in November

The Argyle Civic Association urges you to VOTE YES ON LOCAL MEASURE HH on the November 6 ballot

For Local Open Space, Fire Prevention, Safety and Security Patrols and Clean Water In our East Santa Monica Mountains/Hollywood Hills area.

Dear Friends:

The Argyle Civic Association has unanimously voted to support Proposition HH on November's ballot.

We urge you to VOTE YES ON PROPOSITION HH to preserve local open space, wildlife corridors and to continue fire prevention, brush clearance, and ranger safety patrols in our local areas. Your Yes vote will allow the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority, a local public parks agency, to continue to maintain and expand these invaluable services, which add so much to our quality of life in the East Santa Monica Mountains.

We live in one of the most precious urban mountain communities in the world. The Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority preserves and protects most of our open spaces and parklands, but unlike most public agencies the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority does not receive any ongoing funding from state or local taxes. Most of its budget for maintenance, fire protection, and ranger patrol, for the past twenty years, has come from L.A. County's Prop A, which is about to expire. This funding crisis jeopardizes their ability to maintain and protect our local open spaces and provide local fire prevention and safety services. The urgency is real. Drastic cutbacks loom, unless we all vote YES on Measure HH. The recent Sepulveda Pass Getty fire reminds us how vulnerable our neighborhoods are. The Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA) was part of that amazing fire-fighting team.

The threat of fire is real. Measure HH will reduce the risk of wildfires and will ensure our local open spaces and parklands and water quality are preserved for future generations. Measure HH will prevent drastic cutbacks in fire prevention, ranger safety and security services and acquire critical open space and wildlife corridors.

This measure will only appear on the ballot in our East Santa Monica Mountains/Hollywood Hills area and 100% will be spent in our area.

For $24 per year for the next ten years, we can all rest assured that the MRCA will:

* Maintain and protect local open spaces, parklands and wildlife corridors

* Improve local fire prevention services including crews to clear dry brush

* Maintain and improve park ranger safety and security patrols to prevent crime and vandalism

* Maintain the Mulholland Drive scenic overlooks

* Acquire critical open space

* Protect local water quality and keep pollution and trash out of local creeks and reservoirs

* Perform mandatory annual audits to assure all funds are spent properly and 100% in our local East Santa Monica Mountains/ Hollywood Hills area

We have a great opportunity, right now, to preserve, and even improve upon, our quality of life. A two-thirds vote is needed and we need your help. Everyone's help.

PLEASE help us spread the word to get votes and donations for Measure HH! Tell everyone you know in this area to vote YES on this Measure HH.
