Hollywood Orchard's
Loquat 'Pick n Kitchen'!

Come join in the fun!

The Loquat tree is a popular tree for yards in Southern California, but most homeowners don't get around to using the fruit.

Come to our Pick 'n Kitchen on Saturday, May 19th from 8:45am - 12:30 pm  (Clean-up 12:30-2pm)!

Would you like to join us as we go through the canyon picking the unique "loquats" from neighbor's trees (with their permission, of course) and would you like to help process this fruit into great treats in our Glen Green pop up kitchen advised by Chef Miller (from the Farmer's Market Kitchen) and Mihn Phan (from the Beachwood Cafe)? Either way, we promise you will have a GREAT time on Saturday morning, May 19th. Are you a picker or a kitchener?  Or both?
Here's the plan:

Arrive: 8:45am in the Glen Green Cul-De-Sac (If you have to drive, you will have to park on Beachwood Drive and walk up). Bring bag lunch, beverages provided! Kids are welcome.

We will have an orientation, then picking crews and kitchen crews are formed (you can switch later in the morning if you like!)

9am-11 - PICKERS (wear work pants, long-sleeve shirt, bring your own hand clippers if you have one). We will have poles, ladders, shoulder bags, and buckets. Our leaders will give pointers. Trees in the canyon have been pre-identified. We expect to use 300 lbs for the Community Food Pop Up Kitchen.

9-10:am - KITCHENERS Set up pop-up kitchen
10am-12:30pm: Process Loquats (bring paring knife, apron). Our Harvest and Kitchen Crew will lead us in making some taste treats using the uniquely flavored Loquat!

A Clean-up Party starts at 12:30pm with live Canyon Musicians playing.

We have the ingredients/supplies for the recipes! We await the gift of your hands and heart.

Remember to bring along a snack/bag lunch since we will be doing a 'working lunch' so we can keep momentum!

Please Share Your Loquats

It's fruit harvesting time in Beachwood Canyon. TheLoquat tree is a popular tree for yards in Southern California, but most homeowners don't get around to using the fruit. If your Loquat tree(s) are heavy with fruit, this is your opportunity to give back without spending a penny.

The Hollywood Orchard is a project that volunteer neighbors in Beachwood have been actively building since last October 2011.

A Community-Wide Event

We have been sponsoring activities that bring neighbors together through the harvesting and using of locally grown fruit.  Also, we are searching for a hillside lot to use as a Demonstration Orchard. We are organizing and fundraising to make this a reality.

On Saturday, May 19th, we will have small crews going to homes that have declared their trees ripe and ready for a light harvest. Will you be one of those generous homes in this canyon?

The morning of the harvest, you will get a visit from a few generous volunteers with pickers and buckets. They will be kind to your tree(s) picking only the ripest and highest growing fruit. We'll pick some for your kitchen too. This will be a short visit as we have many trees to visit in a small window.

The fruit will be processed into unique treats to learn about local fruit with our neighbors and with our partner schools.

Please send email to John Allen: john@powerofmusic.net

Do this today! If you want to participate, you'll need to get to us so that we know just where we will be going on that Saturday morning. We thank you and your tree(s) will thank you, too. A gently harvested tree is a healthy tree!
