Hollywood Orchard's Citrus 'Pick n Kitchen'!
Come join in the fun! This Saturday, Feb 25th from 8:45am - 1:00 pm Would you like to join us as we go through the canyon picking fruit from neighbor's trees (with their permission, of course) and would you like to help process this fruit into great treats in our Glen Green pop up kitchen coached by Chef Miller (from the Farmer's Market Kitchen)? Either way, you have a GREAT time this coming Saturday morning. Are you a picker or a kitchener? Here's the plan: Arrive: 8:45am in the Glen Green Cul-De-Sac (If you have to drive, you will have to park on Beachwood Drive and walk up) Bring bag lunch, beverages provided! Kids are welcome: pick fruit and help wash fruit! 9am-11 - PICKERS (wear work pants, long-sleeve shirt, bring pruner clippers if you have one) We will have poles, ladders, shoulder bags, and tubs. Our leaders to give pointers. Trees in the canyon have been pre-identified. We expect to use 150 lbs for the Community Food Pop Up Kitchen. The rest (400 lbs is our goal) will be brought to a Food Pantry. 12-2pm - KITCHENERS: (bring knife, apron, and vegetable peelers, empty jar to fill with juice and take home) At the POP-UP KITCHEN, Our Harvest and Kitchen Crew will lead us in making Preserved Lemons, Dehydrated citrus slices, and Juice to take home! | A Community-Wide Event
|
The preserved lemons will be used to raise funds for Hollywood Orchard!! We have the ingredients/supplies for the recipes! We await the gift of your hands and heart. If you are bringing tools, kitchenware, (see above) put your name on them. Remember to bring along a snack/bag lunch since we will be taking a brief lunch break at 11am. Any questions? It's Harvest Time in Beachwood
| | Please share your fruit! |
It's fruit harvesting time in Beachwood Canyon. If your tree(s) are heavy with fruit, this is your opportunity to give back without spending a penny.
The Hollywood Orchard is a project that volunteer neighbors in Beachwood have been actively building since last October 2011.
We have our sights on a piece of ridge line property to use as the Hollywood Orchard. Meanwhile, we are organizing and fundraising to make this a reality.
This Saturday, we will have small crews going to homes that have declared their trees ripe and ready for a light harvest. Will you be one of those generous homes in this canyon?
The morning of the harvest, you will get a visit from a few generous volunteers with pickers and buckets. They will be kind to your tree(s) picking only the ripest and highest growing fruit. We'll pick some for your kitchen too. This will be a short visit as we have many trees to visit in a small window.
Some of the fruit, the best and prettiest, will go directly to a local foodbank for those less fortunate. The rest will be processed into breads and jellies to use in our fundraising effort to acquire land to plant our community orchard. Please send email to John Allen: john@powerofmusic.net Do this today! If you want to participate, you'll need to get to us so that we know just where we will be going on Saturday morning. We thank you and your tree(s) will thank you, too. A gently harvested tree is a healthy tree! For more info on the project, check out our website HollywoodOrchard.org Download your Tree Sign Up sheet by going to http://beachwoodcanyon.org/ From there, see the Hollywood Orchard graphic on the left side and click right on it! That is your best resource for detailed information on what this is all about. Return to top

Mt. Lee Closure Update
Mt. Lee Drive is close and will remain so through March from Deronda Drive to the Mulholland fork due to an upslope water pipe leak that undermined the road bed. | | photo courtesy of Tom Labonge |
Councilman LaBonge introduced an emergency motion earlier this month to make sure restoring this critical public safety route got top priority. Since then, plans have been approved and a contractor retained to do the work, which is underway now and will continue through the end of March. You can still hike up to Mt. Lee Drive, above the closure, from the Griffith Observatory. (note from the BCNA: Go to TheHollywoodSign.org for hiking hints) The following is from the City of Los Angeles Bureau of Engineering, describing the road-repair project. On the evening of January 27, 2012, a washout of the Mulholland Highway developed approximately 1/5 of a mile northeast of the intersection of the Mulholland Highway and Deronda Drive in the Hollywood Hills. The Bureau of Street Services closed the road to vehicular traffic. Since this section of the Mulholland Highway is essential in providing access to the Mt. Lee Communications Center (one of the City's major emergency communication facilities), the roadway is being repaired on as a matter of urgent necessity. On Friday, February 10, 2012 the City Council adopted a Motion (CF 12-0210) which directed the Bureau of Engineer to immediately begin design and construction to repair the road. On February 10, 2012 the Bureau of Engineering issued a construction order to an emergency on-call contractor to start repairs, and work began Saturday morning, February 11, 2012. The repair will realign the road by removing the hard bedrock along the slope above the road, and filling the washout with angular rock. A storm water catch basin and dispersal pipe is also included as part of the final repair. Construction is proceeding on an expedited basis. The construction is scheduled to be substantially completed by end of March 2012, provided no unforeseen conditions are uncovered that may prolong the grading operations. Gene Edwards of the Bureau of Engineering is the Project Manager: (213) 847-0463. Return to top
