Annual Meeting THIS Thursday Night

Lake Hollywood Update - Tom Labonge

I want to thank you for sharing your morning with me and my staff at Lake Hollywood Park this past Tuesday. As I stated, collaboration is the key to all success. Here is an updated follow-up of some of the proposed projects we discussed at our meeting together.

Lake Hollywood Park: There is a growing consensus to expand the children's play area and upgrade its equipment. A 42-inch fence will be reconstructed and moved, allowing for a larger dog-free portion of the park. A sketch and design is expected in 60 days from the
Department of Recreation and Parks. A formal meeting will be held on this matter at a time and date to be determined.

Mount Lee Communications Project: Construction of a new communications building with independent emergency generator systems is currently in the EIR phase. The Bureau of Engineering has prepared a draft Initial Study/Mitigated Negative Declaration, which will soon be released for public review.

Proposed Fire Station 76 Replacement: There is now a consensus to move toward the next step of analyzing the feasibility of a proposed fire station on the DWP parcel. The Bureau of Engineering will meet with us to discuss utility placement as well as preliminary grade and soil analysis. LAFD will also be an important partner.

DWP Parcel Acquisition: Efforts are still underway to pursue an acquisition of DWP's three parcels in order to extend Griffith Park and endow it with approximately 80 more acres of parkland. We are working with DWP to lease the easements, and this is expected within the next 180 days.

Trail to Magic Tree: We propose to have a meeting next month to walk through the proposed trail to Magic Tree. This trail will hook up with an existing switchback trail about 800 feet from the end of Wonderview Drive.

Lake Hollywood Vista: A separate meeting will be held in the next 45 days at the Hollywood City Hall to discuss next steps toward resolving issues of traffic and overcrowding at the Lake Hollywood Vista.

Lake Hollywood: The current projection for the reopening of the perimeter of the lake is for November 2012

Protecting a Key Communications Link

Recently, a water-line break caused a collapse of a portion of the access road on Mt. Lee, which leads to a critical first-responder communications tower not far from the HOLLYWOOD Sign.

Tom Labonge showed up on site with clean up crews to take care of the mess from the leak on Mt. Lee.

Councilmember LaBonge introduced what's known as a "Rule 23 Motion", which allows the City Council to take immediate action. The Councilman's motion orders the Department of General Services, the Bureau of Street Services, Recreation and Parks, Bureau of Engineering, ITA, LAPD, LAFD, CAO to report on the mechanisms to fund and repair the vital access road to the communication tower.

This road is closed to hikers and dog walkers trying to access the western portion of Griffith Park. The motion also calls on the appropriate City Department to install k-rail on Mt. Lee Drive to shore up the roadway and provide emergency passage and access to Mt. Lee and the Communications Array and that the Bureau of Engineering, Recreation and Parks, and the Department of Information Technology Agency be requested to report on short and long term solutions and whether any communication equipment will be compromised or vulnerable due to the current or any future road erosion.

Approved Motion Feb 10, 2012 - Thanks Tom!

Note: This is just one more example of our councilmember showing up and taking our issues to heart. Never before have we been the recipient of such responsive action by our elected representative and his staff. When you can, write a letter of appreciation to [email protected].

HOW SHOULD PEOPLE RESPOND TO A MOUNTAIN LION (or a Bob Cat)?

(According to Wildlife Officer Gregory Randall, these rules apply to a Bob Cat as well.)

Mountain Lion

A mountain lion is an ambush animal and rely on stealth and attack prey from behind so it is unlikely that a person would see the mountain lion before it is already watching them.

However should the lion appear:

  • Do NOT turn away
  • Do NOT run.
  • Do NOT crouch or kneel
  • Do NOT "play dead."

Doing any of those things gives a person a profile like the mountain lion's prey and gives the lion an opportunity to strike at the back of the neck. The only exception might be when a person can reach safety very quickly, as by entering a door only a few feet away.

Bob Cat
  • DO stand up
  • DO spread arms wide,or open your coat and or waive your coat around your head like a lasso
  • DO face the lion
  • DO look as large as possible.
  • DO yell in loud low tones not a screaming fear voice, assertive!
  • DO use and air horn or police whistle or which can frighten the lion away.
  • DO throw objects that you already have in hand but never bend down to pick up anythings
  • DO walk with a walking stick or an umbrella you can open and waive around to make yourself look larger.
