There are lots of fun things to all through December. We'll send reminders from time to time.

We hope you will consider joining us downtown on December 8 for the City Planning hearing. The outcome of some of the proposals on the table will impact all of us - and not in a good way. Write if you need a ride or suggestions on how to make a difference:

Drastic Zoning Change Proposed at Best Western Hotel

Beware the Commercial Zoning Camel
The Hollywood Community Plan is proposing to radically upzone the Best Western Hotel lots on Franklin Avenue at Vista Del Mar Avenue and Carmen Avenue. If approved, this change would permanently destroy the entire residential community surrounding these lots. Our peace and quiet, our quality of life and the value of our homes are in danger. We must rally to stop the proposed change now. Time is very short. The Planning Commission is meeting on December 8th (see hearing notice below). They must hear from us in written comments and also at the public hearing. Please send the Planning Commission an email expressing your objection to the zoning change now.

There is a sample letter that you can paste into an email. Go to http://beachwoodcanyon.org/zoning.htm or use your own comments but please send your letter right away. If they don't hear from the community, the change will go through. Also, if you can, please come to the hearing on December 8. For the full text of this flier and a sample letter, go to http://beachwoodcanyon.org/zoning.htm.

Community Plan Update & Hearing Notice

Teamworki

Your letters and emails made it possible to beat back SA 4.3B, the attempt to change the apartments at Argyle and Yucca and the Little Church of Hollywood to commercial.

You also beat back SA 4.8 (Argyle to Vista Del mar) and SA 4.9, 4.10, 4.11 (Tamerind to Canyon) the attempt to triple the size of businesses and ruin neighborhoods. Those changes attempted to repeal the development limitation in ordinance 164705, which protects the community because of the inadequate parking available on nearby streets.

We still have to fight SA 4.8A, 4.8B and 4.8C, the expansion of the Best Western Hotel and the possible conversion of the entire property to allow any type of retail commercial businesses at the location. It would become the second largest commercial property on Franklin and would congest traffic to nightmare proportions. Traffic there is gridlocked most of the time.

We also have to fight SA 4.3, the Manhattan style skyscraperization of Hollywood and Vine.

Your Voice is Vital NOW!

Hearing December 8th - City Planning Commission

From Mary Richardson, Planning

We have completed the Department of City Planning Staff Report for the Hollywood Community Plan. The Staff Report contains a summary of the Plan, summary of community input received at the Public Hearings, and proposed revisions to Plan recommendations.

The Staff Report and Exhibits have all been posted on the Planning Department's website at cityplanning.lacity.org .  You can access the Staff Report and Exhibits by going to cityplanning.lacity.org and clicking on "What's New?" and  "Hollywood Community Plan Update Staff Recommendations". Please note that Exhibit B contains the recommended policy revisions to the Plan text, in addition to the land use revisions outlined in the Staff Report.

The next step in the adoption process is a hearing before the City Planning Commission (CPC) on Thursday, December 8, 2011 after 8:30 A.M. in City Hall, 200 N. Spring Street, Room 350, Los Angeles, CA 90012.  At the December 8th hearing Staff will make a presentation followed by public comment, and the CPC will make a recommendation on the Plan to the City Council.  We appreciate your continued engagement with the Hollywood Community Plan and look forward to seeing you on December 8th.

Fake Door to Door Solicitation Alert

neighborhood watchThere have been incidents reported by neighbors in Beachwood Canyon of men knocking on their doors doing "fundraising". Their behavior indicates that they may not be on the level. Neighbors on Gower, Temple Hill, Scenic and Beachwood have contacted us saying these are not one time visitations. Scott reports:

"Today two young arrived at our door one hour apart. Each started by announcing themselves as "a Neighbor". After opening the door, each first looked in to our home then went on to try to sell us books. Both became uncomfortable when asked for personal ID. A silver van was following the second young man as he made his way back down Beachwood. Families planning on be away for the holidays should contact Post or advise their closest neighbor since this could be a group checking for empty residences.

I called LAPD and asked if they would do a "drive-by" of the street just to see if their presence might warn off this nuisance."

If you see strangers acting suspiciously, call 9-1-1. Do NOT open your door to strangers. It's best to speak to them through the door so they know that you are home but that you are not receiving guests unannounced. Be letting them know you're home, you can avoid having your home entered and any resulting confrontation. Stay safe! Call 9-1-1 if you feel there is danger.

Also, if you are not already signed up with Post, please contact them at 800-654-7678 or go to http://postalarm.com .
