November 2011 Newsletter

Greetings!

Your neighborhood association has been very busy. The dust has settled from the redistricting hearings. Great outcome! Our Santa Monica Mountains "community of interest" has been preserved. We are continuing our efforts to get a Special Federal Aviation Regulation in place for all non-emergency, non-military helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft occupying our Mt. Lee airspace. Currently we are requesting support for our petition from every neighborhood group within the SFAR boundaries.

We continue to enjoy a positive and productive relationship with elected City officials including Councilman Tom Labonge and his staff of tireless individuals.

Stay tuned for details of changes coming to the Village Coffee Shop - soon to be renamed The Beachwood Cafe.

Helicopter Update & Resources

Click for Tourism Update
The skies above our Mt. Lee area are getting increasingly busy. The impact is felt from every corner of our area from the Golden State Freeway/Griffith Park to the Hollywood Bowl and Runyon Canyon.

Recently, there have been articles outlining the growth of the helicopter business. Click on the Oct 29th link on the following page:  http://beachwoodcanyon.org/tourismupdate.htm

A brochure was sent to us by another impacted community. This brochure boasts a "Pilot Adventure" to anyone willing to endure 15 minutes of training. Check it out for yourself:

 http://beachwoodcanyon.org/HeloBrochure.htm

At a recent meeting of the Van Nuys Airport Citizen's Advisory Council, the following phone number was shared as THE number to call if you are bothered by helicopter behavior at any point in the day or night: 818-904-6291.

Another fun resource is Webtraker: http://www331.webtrak-lochard.com/webtrak/vny4

On the lower left hand side, uncheck the replay area so you can enter the military time/date for the offending aircraft. On the lowest slider, you can control the speed at which you view the activity over our area.

See something suspicious? Just push the pause button. Click on the aircraft. There are three choices. One is to report the offense. One is "static track" where you can actually view the whole trail of that aircraft. I love this because it shows how long this aircraft spends time in our airspace and it's circling along with the tail number. You can take a screen shot. This is valuable when reporting to the FAA. You can send screen shots and details to us and we will funnel this info to several authorities to get attention to this growing impact.

Keep letting us know what you're experiencing:

Great shot, right? This shot was taken with an ordinary camera outside Bronson Caves
The Beachwood Canyon Neighborhood Association has been hard at work on solutions to our tourist situation. We know they are drawn by the Hollywood Sign but we had an idea that could draw them in a different way. How about we reveal some of the insider's secrets to our hills? There are loads of places to catch a great shot of the Hollywood Sign outside of Beachwood Canyon.

Check out TheHollywoodSign.org. There are two journeys posted there now -- a Bronson Caves hike starting at Bronson Park and a Griffith Park hike starting at Mount Hollywood Drive by the Observatory road. We're building it daily and, weather permitting; we'll have new photos up soon.

The journey up to the Bronson Caves with a side trip to Bronson Park is an experience that the whole family will love. We plan to include details of the Griffith Observatory experience including alternative ways to get there - hiking anyone? How about Griffith Park, Travel Town, the Merry Go Round? There is so much to do here that won't include getting tied up in grid lock on dead end streets in Hollywoodland or being yelled at for driving on our narrow side streets to a photo opportunity. We invite your ideas. We are happy to add new places that only you are aware exist.

Occupy L.A. Gets Endorsement
Occupy L.A.
Occupy L.A. endorsed by L.A. City Council

The Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday, October 12th, passed a resolution supporting the First Amendment rights of demonstrators camped outside City Hall for the Occupy LA movement.  As the protest moved into its third week, the Council heard public comment from scores of protestors, allowing them to move their encampment on to the South Lawn of LA City Hall.  The demonstrators lauded the LAPD and General Services Police for their kind and considerate treatment.

Irene & Bob Need a Home Together

These two are inseperable
If you have room in your heart and home, even temporarily, please contact: Helen Hartel at: har2tel@yahoo.com

Irene is a 1-year-old stray Pit Bull mix and Bob (the love of Irene's life) is a 4-year old Chihuahua mix. They were taken in to the Agoura Shelter while found wandering together on the streets. They both walk well on leash, take treats nicely and they wait to go potty outside of their kennel. At night, they snuggle together on the same bed.

Irene is bright and can sit on command while Bob prefers to be held and carried around. The challenge for us is that we can't find people who are willing to adopt both of them together. They are big time favorites with all the shelter volunteers and we can't wait until the right person or rescue comes along.

When inquiring at the Agoura Shelter, Bob's ID is A4330461 and Irene's ID is A4330459.

Agoura Hills Animal Shelter, 29525 Agoura Road,
Agoura Hills, California 91301
Phone: 818-991-0071

Contact Helen for more info: har2tel@yahoo.com

Please consider adopting them both as they are very attached to one another.

Irene and Bob
Please consider taking these two into your home. They truly are bonded together, as unusual as this looks!

Mom and Pups Need a Forever Home

PepperJack looking for a home
PepperJack needs to be adopted soon

These pups are about 7 weeks old. They need a home with someone who can pay close attention to them at this early stage in their little lives. They are very sweet and loving pups.

Their Mom also needs a home. She's about 1-1/2 years old and a great gal. She's sweet, house trained, social and is good with dogs (big and small) as well as cats.

P.S. A bit about fostering:

We always need loving foster homes for our dogs. If you aren't ready to make the commitment to adopt a pet for life, please consider fostering a rescue dog. Fostering gets the dog out of boarding into a less stressful home environment where we can learn more about him or her. The money we save on boarding helps save even more dogs. As a foster we count on you to feed, walk, play with, love and care for the dog just as you would your own pet. while we remain financially responsible for the dog until a permanent home is found. When fostering, you can be involved in the screening process of potential adopters if you like, or you may choose to adopt the dog permanently yourself after a trial period. And when the dog goes off to a new home. you may shed a tear as you say good-bye to the dog who has slept in your house. But your heart will be full knowing that you played a huge part in this dog's journey to their wonderful new life. Email ThumpingTails@aol.com if you would like to be a foster for one of our homeless dogs.
