Airport Advisory Council Backs Measures to Reduce Helicopter Noise

The Van Nuys Airport Citizens Advisory Council gave its support Oct. 4 to two measures aimed at reducing noisy helicopters.

The council voted 6-2 to back pending legislation in Congress that requires the Federal Aviation Administration to come up with regulations for helicopter operations in Los Angeles County.

In an 8-0 vote, the council supported a petition filed by Beachwood Canyon Neighborhood Association with the FAA to establish a special federal aviation regulation for the Mt. Lee area in Hollywood and Griffith Park that attracts helicopters ferrying tourists to view the famed Hollywood sign.

The petition seeks to limit helicopter flights to no lower than a 2,000 foot altitude.

"If we endorse this motion that will go on the record and put some sway in what they are trying to do," council member Gerald Silver said, in encouraging passage of supporting the neighborhood association's petition."

City and Neighborhood Leaders Brave Weather to Work Together
Rainy day

Councilman Labonge, along with members of his staff met with BCNA and HHA reps on Wednesday, October 5th in the driving rain to locate places to install No-Smoking signs. Labonge introduced a few new ideas to address tourism.

Tom Toiling
Tom Labonge shovels debris from roadway while Dave Ahern helps with the cleanup.

While looking around the area at the top of Deronda, Tom stopped to cut some branches that were hanging over the pedestrian walk way and shovel debris off the steps. He carries these tools with him in his car and can often be seen taking care of business in real time!

The group moved on to several other sensitive spots in our community. One of these areas was the viewing spot above Lake Hollywood Park. Recently, most of the curb on Mulholland Hwy. leading to this vista received a nice coat of red paint. Soon, the remainder will be painted and there are plans to paint white "t" marks on the road in front of the viewing area (on both sides of the street) to help keep parked cars within a "box".

Tom pointed out that the overgrowth that was cleared will soon be growing back greener than ever.
Ideas in the rain

At the end of the neighborhood tour, the group was delivered back to the Village with a promise of another get-together when weather is better to take a hike on the property to the west of Lake Hollywood to discuss a possible trail head, tourist parking, and other amenities.

Good things are on the horizon with both the Beachwood Canyon Neighborhood Association and the Hollywoodland Homeowners Association working together with our Council office to make good changes in our community.
