Screening Invitation
Invitation from neighbor and actor, Peter Franzen:
Hi and Happy New Year!
I want to let you know that it's
time for the Scandinavian Film Festival again.
One of my
latest films (HELLSINKI) from Finland will be screened on January 17th, at 2:30
p.m., at the Writer's Guild Theater in
Beverly Hills (135 S Doheny Dr., Beverly Hills, CA, 90211 (323) 782-4525).
I had a challenging and a
"fun" role of KRISU to play. HELLSINKI is based on a true story about
a bunch of Finnish "Goodfellas", so... it's a gangster movie. It
takes place between 1966-1979.
HELLSINKI was the biggest grossing
domestic film in Finland in 2009.
They always have nice Scandinavian
(Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish and Icelandic) films at the Festival (with
subtitles, of course).
Check out the Festival schedule from
the link underneath.
http://www.scandinavianfilmfestivalla.com/filmdetail.php?film_id=257&date_id=49&year_id=21
See you in HELLSINKI!
All the best,
Peter

DASH Bus 208 Update
Recently Beachwood Canyon Neighborhood Association
representatives along with several neighbors met with Councilman Tom Labonge,
Council Deputy Sharon Shapiro, and legislative deputy Lisa
Schechter in the Councilman's Downtown Los Angeles office. The discussion was
very productive and we can expect that our DASH bus 208 issue will be heard soon
in the Transportation Committee. Just a hint of one plan on the table: Merge
Beachwood DASH 208 with Hollywood/Wilshire DASH but alter that route to go
through Larchmont. Discussion took place regarding extending hours so that
people could use the DASH to go out to dinner and be assured of having a ride
up the hill at the end of the evening. Your attendance will be necessary to
actually persuade the Transportation Committee to make the changes that will
result in increased ridership - saving our DASH bus!
We will send out an email when we have an actual date for the
Transportation Committee hearing. Please make an effort
to make the meeting and bring your neighbors too.

Young Dog Needs Home

This dog was turned in due to financial constraints. He's
such a good little dude. He is three years old and needs to be neutered but he
really is a special guy and would be a great dog for someone. Everyone at
his foster home is in love with him. But there is no space for him and he needs
a permanent, loving home.
If you have no room for him, please forward to your friends.
If you want more information on this little guy, please contact Joan at Joan.Boorstein@showtime.net

One Click Saves Lives

Hi, all you animal lovers!
The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble getting enough people to click on it
daily so they can meet their quota of getting FREE FOOD donated every
day to abused and neglected animals. It takes less than a minute (about
15 seconds) to go to their site and click on the purple box 'fund food for
animals for free'. This doesn't cost you a thing.
Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate
food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.
Here's the web site! Please pass it along to people you know.

One Light Bulb at a Time - Editorial

This is a contribution from a neighbor -
enjoy:
I was in Lowes the other day and just for the heck of it, I was looking at the
hose attachments. They were all made in China. The next day I was in
Ace Hardware and just for the heck of it, I checked the
hose attachments there. They were made in USA.
In our current economic situation, every little thing we buy or do affects
someone else - even their job.
My grandson likes Hershey's candy. I noticed, though, that it's marked
"made in Mexico" now. I don't buy it any more.
My favorite toothpaste (Colgate) is made in Mexico...now I have switched to
Crest. I guess you have to read the labels on everything these days. This past weekend I was at Kroger. I needed 60W light bulbs and
Bounce dryer sheets. I was in the light bulb aisle and right next to the GE
brand I normally buy was an off-brand labeled, "Everyday Value". I
picked up both types of bulbs and compared the stats - they were the same
except for the price. The GE bulbs were more money than the Everyday Value brand but the
thing that surprised me the most was the fact that GE was made in MEXICO and
the Everyday Value brand was made in - get ready for this - the USA in a
company in Cleveland, Ohio. So on to another aisle - Bounce Dryer Sheets...yep, you guessed
it, Bounce cost more money and is made in Canada. The Everyday Value brand was
less money and MADE IN THE USA! I did laundry yesterday and the dryer
sheets performed just like the Bounce Free I have been using for years and at
almost half the price! So throw out the myth that you cannot find products you use every
day that are made right here. My challenge to you is to start reading the labels when you shop
for everyday things and see what you can find that is made in the USA - the job
you save may be your own or your neighbors! We can all start buying American,
one light bulb at a time! |
