Gower Powerline Project Threatens Views gowerpowerpoles

The L.A.D.W.P. has begun a project on Gower that creates 60' power poles from the existing 40' poles. This change is planned for Gower all the way to Graciosa. Understandably, the neighbors are upset. Their valuable view of the Hollywood Sign and other areas of our canyon will be changed forever.

The City Council office has heard from the Beachwood Canyon Neighborhood Association and various neighbors on Gower. The L.A.D.W.P. and their own design team promises a meeting with the neighbors to find a way to adjust the project and mitigate the  negative impacts that this project will surely create.

If you live on Gower between Franklin and Graciosa, you should be included in this discussion. Meanwhile, the schedule has not been adjusted and the poles north of Scenic are going to become 60' tall starting this Monday. ACT NOW in order to have a voice in this matter. You should be at this meeting. It may take place as soon as Friday, October 2!!! (possibly in the mid afternoon).

Contact the City Council at 213-485-3337 and ask for Sharon Shapiro. She will share more info as it comes in. Thanks to all within and outside the city who are helping the neighbors!

Also, send us an e-mail to let us know that you have taken action. We need to stay together and coordinated to achieve a positive result.

 Upper Beachwood Maintainance Hole Project

Project background: The City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works would like to inform you of a new sewer project that will soon begin in your neighborhood. The sewers in this area were originally built in 1923, prior to being annexed to the City of Los Angeles. It was later discovered that these sewers follow the street alignments and contain many sharp bends. Additionally, they do not contain adequate maintenance holes for access and repair. This project will provide the much needed maintenance holes to allow proper sewer service and reduce the possibility of spills and odors. Future projects will take place in other portions of the community.

The approximate boundary of the project is Beachwood Drive to the north and west, Hollyridge Drive to the east, and Westshire Drive to the south.

Construction Facts: Construction will consist of 52 shallow maintenance holes and 1581 linear feet of 8-inch sewers.

Construction Period: fall 2009 through fall 2010. Weather or other circumstances could shift the work schedule. Residents will be informed as conditions warrant.

Details: Construction will generally take place Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m., and on major streets from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. to minimize traffic impacts.

Estimated Cost: $838,000.

Construction methods will include typical sewer excavation and surface disruptions performed by "open cut methods."

Due to the narrow and winding hilly streets and congested shallow underground utilities, the duration of the work fronting your property is not known. Inconveniences to you will be minimized to every extent possible in order to allow for construction of the maintenance holes.

Trucks and other equipment such as pipes will be used during construction, and you may see open trench excavation and debris removal.

Dust control will be provided in all project areas.

Enclosures or other barriers will be used in construction areas whereever necessary for public safety. Please do not enter the construction work area.

Local access will be allowed. Traffic will be restored to normal when construction has been completed at the end of each workday.

Trash pickup, deliveries, access to residential driveways will be maintained whenever possible; in the event that temporary access is blocked, ou will be properly notified.

Parking will be temporarily restricted in some areas, and signs will be posted in advance telling you where and when.

You will be notified 24-48 hours in advance whenever sewer service may be temporarily interrupted.

For more information: Call the City of Los Angeles Public Affairs Office at (213) 978-0333 if you have any questions regarding this project or visit www.lasewers.org and click on "City Sewers," then "Current Sewer Construction Projects," then find "Upper Beachwood East Maintenance Hole" and click on the project name.
