Urban Design for Hollywood - please attend!

Major Changes Proposed for Hollywood

Message from Bob Eicholz:

Did you know that major changes in density are being proposed for Hollywood?   These changes would allow higher buildings in many areas, vastly increasing the number of people, the height of skyscapers (as in MUCH HIGHER), and the amount of traffic. One zone under consideration would allow denser development right up to the Outpost Entrance, NORTH of Franklin.

Speak now or forever hold your peace.

The first community meetings are as follows. Please consider attending. I can't think of ANY proposals that will have more impact on us...from traffic, to noise, to quality of life. Here's the scoop, directly from the CRA/LA:

Come tell us what you think at an Urban Design Open House!

What is Urban Design?
Urban Design investigates what our city looks like between buildings. It provides the look and feel of our streets, sidewalks, parks and plazas. It also deals with built form: the look and feel of buildings, their scale, and how they relate to the street. Good urban design creates places in which it's comfortable to walk, bike, work, shop and socialize.

The Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA/LA) is preparing an urban design plan for Hollywood Boulevard and the surrounding area. We're hosting an open house so you can tell us what you like about this great street and what you'd like to change.

Would you like wider sidewalks?
Friendly Storefronts?
New Iconic Buildings?

Who Should Come?

· People who live and work in Hollywood· Business and property owners · Students and Parents · Anyone interested in planning and development in Hollywood

Joint Appeal UPDATE by Jason Chan (Planning Dept)

(Regarding 6041 Rodgerton (retaining wall issue) appealed by both the Hollywoodland Homeowner's Assn and the Beachwood Canyon Neighborhood Assn.)

The Central Area Planning Commission voted to continue the case regarding the appeal of ZA-2007-2504-ZAD for around 60 days. [6041 Rodgerton Dr.)

Their vote to continue is based on the expiration of their DRB [Design Review Board] and SP [Specific Plan] approval, which expired May 2008.

So, the applicant will re-file for DRB and SP approval. This process takes several months, so in the interim, a consultation will take place to discuss the project with the applicant & the DRB at our next meeting on Thursday, June 25 at 6pm. [Location of meeting is Village Coffee Shop - see hearing notice below] The DRB then will forward a statement to the Commission regarding the project.

Then, a formal hearing will take place on the project at a date to be determined later.

Note that consultations have limited public comment, since it is not a formal hearing. Any public comment is at the discretion of the DRB Chairman.

Thank you,

Jason Chan

Ready, Set, Go!
fireatsign
Battalion Chief, Chris Kawai suggests that hillside dwellers become familiar with the evacuation routes and emergency preparations in case of fire or earthquake. Please click on the Ready, Set, Go!

Since the brush on all three sides (east, west, and north) of our canyon hasn't erupted in fire for a very long time, Chief Kawai believes it is a matter of when not if there is a fire!

Recently, a neighbor living in the northern areas of Hollywoodland witnessed people walking the trail smoking, flicking ashes into the dry brush. When the neighbor yelled to put it out, the smoker got the message but this goes on every day. We need more of those large signs placed at trail heads and within the trail route. And the smoking in open space is just one small threat to the future safety of our canyon.

We must be prepared. Please pour over the material in the Ready, Set, Go! booklet.

Let this summer be the time when your family makes a plan - when our community creates a plan - neighbor to neighbor, our watch groups are going to have to transform to community safety and emergency rescue groups.

We will be holding meetings this summer and will invite Chief Kawai to help us form our neighborhood plan.

For more information on the materials here and on those we posted on our website, please write to Chief Kawai: Christopher.kawai@lacity.org

Tigger is Missing!
Tigger
I am your neighbor in the 6100 block of Glen Oak Street. My cat Tigger has been missing since Tuesday of last week and it is unlike him to be gone that long. He is indoor/outdoor and is part wild leopard.  His breed is called Bengal.  He grew up here in Beachwood and is quite savvy about predators and is an active rat, mouse, bird, and lizard hunter himself.

He is 3 years old, 20 lbs, brown and gold marbled and striped and looks like a tiger. (see photo). He has a brown leather collar and a tag with my cell number and address on it.

He is extremely friendly and loves to jump into people's cars.  He mostly cruises upper Glen Oak walk where we live and is usually out hunting in the hills above the house.

Any one who has seen him could call me on my cell phone 213-793-6264. Also the home number is 323-462-2240 (no cell reception at home as you know).

With much appreciation,
Stella
