Annual Beachwood Canyon Neighborhood Association Meeting Report
Hillside Development Meetings Held by the City of Los Angeles
Development - Upcoming Hearings
Property Tax Scam Alert
Greetings!
The City is finally focusing on development in our hillsides. Please read the flyer and make a point of attending at least one of these meeting to share your concerns. We also need to make certain that any ordinances put in place by the city for hillsides does not undermine what is in place for Hollywoodland - our Specific Plan.

Also, read the Property Tax Scam report before opening your mail.

The Annual Meeting was a smashing success - please read below and don't forget to visit the website www.BeachwoodCanyon.org for even more info.

Have a safe week and keep us posted on happenings in your part of the neighborhood.

Annual Beachwood Canyon Neighborhood Association Meeting Report

There was a full house (courtyard) on Saturday afternoon (January 31, 2009). Captain Beatrice Girmala gave an inspiring presentation. Having spent most of her life in Hollywood, she now lives in Whitley Heights (90068) and shares many of our concerns and challenges living in a hillside community in Hollywood.

The Captain was generous enough to give us her e-mail. When you have a concern or need answers about anything in our community, send her e-mail. Her Blackberry will light up and she will make an effort to address your concerns. With her extensive years of service within the L.A.P.D. in Hollywood, she has made many valuable partnerships with the heads of departments such as the Department of Transportation, L.A. Fire Department, Homeless Services, and much more. She can direct your concerns to the appropriate department if those issues extend outside the area of law enforcement.

Captain Girmala's e-mail address is: 24916@lapd.lacity.org
Captain Girmala's phone number is 213-972-2900

equestrian meetingAssemblymember Mike Feuer outlined many new bills that he is writing and some that are already being opposed by big business, liquor sales establishments, billboard companies, etc.
Assemblymember Mike Feuer's webpage:  http://democrats.assembly.ca.gov/members/a42/

Here's his e-mail address: Assemblymember.Feuer@assembly.ca.gov

The Assemblymember's effort to make mandatory the installation of breathalyzer devices (Ignition Interlock Devices) in cars of repeat drunk drivers is one of many that we should all get behind. The L.A. Times did a story on this in last weeks Sunday Issue.

Neighbor, Len Efron shared this info after the meeting:

There is an item titled "How to Stop Drunk Drivers" in today's Sunday LA Times Parade Magazine (see page 6, lower left) discussing the Ignition Interlock.
It requests readers to "VOTE" to express their feelings with respect to making Ignition Interlocks mandatory:

There's simply a Yes/No choice button to click. There is no request for identity information or your email address. After you click, it immediately displays the current vote statistics. After my vote, the score read: YES=94%, NO=6%. (Unfortunately it does not reveal the number of votes cast.)

P.S.  Recently, while at Office Depot, we saw and purchased an inexpensive key holder, which consisted of a ring for the keys and a fob, which was a mini-breathe analyzer. You press a button; blow and depending on whether your blood alcohol level is above/below 0.08%, a RED or GREEN led lights up.  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wildlife: While our Wildlife Officer was unable to attend, we have text that he sent to address most of our wildlife concerns along with his contact information:

Gregory Randall, Wildlife Specialist
3201 Lacy St., L.A., CA 90031

grandall@ani.lacity.org

Gregory asks that you visit the following webpage as it is rich with wildlife info:

Heather/Durand Drop off issue: Joy Efron shared the history of this issue. There may be a settlement in the future coming from the lawsuit that the victim (neighbor fell over the drop off and is now paralyzed) launched against the City of Los Angeles. When that settlement is complete and official, we will send another update. The goal is to get this part over with so that something can happen on Heather at Durand to make that area safe so no one else falls or drives over that curb.

Election: Our board just got a little bit bigger - five directors were reelected and the attendees voted by acclimation to add Kim Dullaghan (Glen Green) to our board. She is young and enthusiastic - a great and tireless helper (she was one of the organizers of this years Trombone Christmas event on Glen Green). Welcome to the team, Kim!

Property Tax Scam Alert

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Michael Fuller and his neighbors received a rather official-looking notice the other day instructing the recipient to send $179.00 in order to get their property "reassessed". He contacted the L.A. County Tax Assessor's office and was informed that this is a scam. In small print at the bottom of the first page, it says, "Property Tax Reassessment is not a government Agency."  The sender threatens that tardiness will result in a $30.00 late fee. They are counting on people not paying attention. Please do NOT send money to this third party. Thanks for your sharp eye, Michael.
