Five Ideas for the (Re)Evolution of the "People Side of the Business"
Over six years have passed - a virtual eternity in today's fast-paced world - since Keith Hammonds penned the now-classic "Why We Hate HR" in Fast Company. But comments continue to be posted on the article, with the vast majority agreeing with Hammonds' conclusion that HR's potential for creating sustainable competitive advantage has been "utterly wasted."
The evidence we have accrued at McBassi indicates that this is a reality that senior executives cannot afford to tolerate. As globalization has made sustainable sources of competitive advantage harder and harder to come by, strategic human capital management takes on greater and greater economic urgency. See, in particular, Chapters 5 & 6 of Good Company for our most recent summary of the evidence. (And make no mistake - senior executives certainly share responsibility for the current state of affairs with HR.)
We've put together five ideas that, if taken to heart and acted on by HR departments, could begin to transform the sorry state of affairs described by Hammonds that still persists in most of the HR world.
1. The HR profession over-benchmarks and under-analyzes.
2. "One-size-fits-all" solutions fit no one.
3. Employee engagement should not be maximized. It
should be optimized.
4. Analytics is the new HR competence.
5. HR has been "playing small." There is a much bigger role to play for those with the courage and vision to seize it.
