Festivals Acadiens et Créoles
Come help us celebrate our heritage Oct. 14-16 at Festivals Acadiens et Créoles, the largest Cajun and Creole festival in the world in the number one Food City in the U.S. Lafayette was recently named "Best Food City" by Rand McNally and USA Today and Festivals weekend is a great time to see for yourself why Lafayette deserves this title. The area's best restaurants and caterers showcase their specialties at the festival - try alligator sausage poboys, shrimp and grits, cochon de lait wraps, crawfish enchiladas and beignets for starters. The festival kicks off Oct. 14 with a new event - the Friday Fais do do in Girard Park - featuring a line-up that includes Geno Delafose, Jo-El Sonnier and Bruce Daigrepont. The festival continues through the weekend with the best in Cajun and Creole music, including performances by GRAMMY Award winning musicians, workshops and jam sessions. In addition to music and food, Festivals Acadiens features the Louisiana Crafts Fair, which presents traditional and contemporary artisans demonstrating and selling fine crafts. In recent years, Festivals Acadiens has added programming including a dancehall tent and a food demonstration tent that presents area chefs, home cooks and others demonstrating how some of your favorite dishes get from the field to the table. Always thinking of ways to enhance the festival-goers' experience, this year's addition is the Sports Tent, where you can watch your favorite team, catch up on the scores or check out the New Orleans Saints while dancing a two-step! DUCK, FRESH SAUSAGE & MIRILTON GUMBO From Chef Patrick Mould: It's the crack of dawn, 32 degrees, a stiff north wind is blowing and a light mist is falling. You ask why I have a smile of on my face? Duck season is open. Don't get me wrong I'm not an avid hunter. I didn't grow up going out to the blind. I'm an occasional hunter but all it takes is once to be hooked. Part of the allure is just being miles away from civilization, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. I created this recipe when I was the chef at Charley G's in Lafayette. The creative twist on this recipe is to smoke the ducks prior to adding them to the gumbo. At the time I did this it hadn't been done before. Unusual considering how much we smoke meat in Louisiana. If you don't have a hunter in the family, don't worry I use a domesticated duck for this recipe. Get the recipe here>

GOT BOUDIN? Lafayette's Boudin Cook-Off is seeking people who want to put their boudin eating skills to the test at the annual event's boudin eating contest. Contestants are challenged to eat six links of boudin in the fastest possible time. The eating contest draws huge crowds and more than a dozen participants, even some unlikely entrants. "Last year we had a young lady who came dressed in her own tiara and gown and although she came in second place, in my opinion, she was the Boudin Queen for the day!" says Dawn Carriker, event organizer. It is free to enter and the winner receives a cook-off t-shirt, a commemorative sash, and bragging rights. In addition to boudin sampling, the free event includes music by the Sons of Voodoo and the Howdies, free fun jumps, free ice cream sandwiches from Blue Bell, cooking demos from Foreman's, Rouses', and Savoie's, a free "boudin toss", and free face painting. The free event will be held Oct. 22 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. in downtown Lafayette, at Parc Sans Souci (201 E. Vermilion St.) Boudin sampling begins at 10 a.m.; boudin sample tickets may be purchased for 50 cents. Ample free parking is available downtown adjacent to the park. The event is presented by BoudinLink.com and CajunGrocer.com. For more information, click here.
