How you can engage with NPCA Global Education

As the trees and flowers come into bloom and the weather turns warmer, students and teachers alike start to think about summer.  With this issue of GlobalEdNews, we share some ideas on how you can get more involved with NPCA Global Education for the summer or anytime, whether you have a little time or a lot!
  • As always, our summer newsletter features recommended summer reading.  Email Susan Neyer, editor, by June 8 at susanneyer@astound.net to share your favorite "global" book(s).  Then enjoy your reading when the list is revealed in the newsletter coming out in June.
  • When we receive review copies of materials, we like to offer them to those of you in the classroom now to use, review and then keep!  Interested?  Email us at globaled@peacecorpsconnect.org to get on the list.  Let us know relevant grade levels and subject areas.
  • Meet up with Returned Peace Corps Volunteers and learn how you can tap into the resources of this vibrant community (while having some fun!) at Peace Corps Connect - Minneapolis 2012 from June 29 - July 1.  Learn more and register here.
  • Our four upcoming Expos are all focused on global education!  Each one of these free events will highlight resources and stories you can bring into your classroom.  Save the dates!  Details and registration links will be posted to our website shortly.
    • Saturday, June 23 in Nashville, TN
    • Sunday, July 1 in Minneapolis, MN
    • Saturday, September 22 in Providence, RI
    • Saturday, September 29 in Los Angeles, CA

Thank you for all that you do to bring the world into classrooms and communities.

Peace,

Peace Corps Third Goal Expos to Focus on Global Education

NPCA and Peace Corps are kicking off the next 50 years of Peace Corps by focusing on the "third goal" of Peace Corps:  bringing the world back home.  One way we are doing this is through a series of four Third Goal Expos - events open to the Peace Corps community, the general public and - especially - educators.  These expos will showcase the countries and cultures where Peace Corps Volunteers have served and highlight Volunteers' experiences and projects.  The Expos will feature Peace Corps' Speakers Match, Correspondence Match, and Coverdell World Wise Schools programs and showcase ways that educators and returned Volunteers can share Peace Corps experiences in classrooms and communities.

Here is the schedule of expos to date (subject to change):
  • Saturday, June 9 - Nashville, TN
  • Sunday, July 1 - Minneapolis, MN
  • Saturday, September 22 - Providence, RI
  • Saturday, September 30 - Los Angeles, CA

All expos are free and open to the public.  Complete details and registration information will be posted, as available, to the NPCA website.  If you are interested in being a presenter at any of these expos, please contact Anne Baker at anne@peacecorpsconnect.org.  See you there!

Teaching about Kony 2012

We've seen a flurry of emails with suggestions on how to deal with Kony 2012 in the classroom.  While we have not been able to carefully review each one, they come from trusted sources and we share a few of them here as a resource for you.

  • Influence of 'Kony 2012' Video Needs Moderation - blog post on Teaching Tolerance website by Margy Burns Knight, RPCV and author of Africa Is Not a Country and other children's books
  • React and Respond: The Phenomenon of Kony 2012, written on behalf of the Outreach Council of the African Studies Association.  Download the teachers guide.  "Our approach in writing the guide is to support and encourage teachers to do what they do best: to move from facts to understanding and to foster open inquiry in the classroom. Thus, you will find open-ended question in the media response section and multiple perspectives in the resources list at the end."
  • YouTube response from Ugandan journalist Rosebell Kagumire
  • Africa Focus Bulletin, March 14, 2012This AfricaFocus Bulletin contains a transcript of the Rosebell Kagumire video, as well as an article by the distinguished Ugandan scholar Mahmood Mamdani. Also below is an article with a similar message by noted Sudan scholar Alex de Waal, who has been a key advisor to African Union mediation in Sudan.  Added at the last minute before posting, at the risk of making this too long, is a very important notice from the African Youth Initiative Network (AYINET), a Ugandan NGO which screened the KONY 2012 to an audience of over 35,000 people in Northern Uganda, in the belief that they should see what is being said about them. The audience, many of them victims of the LRA, responded angrily to what they regarded as the film maker's commercialization of their situation. AYINET has suspended further screenings of the film.
