March 8, 2012                                                                                                                      www.PeaceCorpsConnect.org

Greetings!

Our March advocacy update is devoted to the National Day of Action.

What happened...And what remains to be done.

Oklahoma AdvocatesDeadline Approaches on Day of Action Letters

What a day we had on Capitol Hill on March 1st!  127 congressional meetings.  Information distributed to virtually every congressional office.  Meanwhile, countless phone calls and emails coming in from Peace Corps supporters all across the country.

Our 8th Annual National Day of Action in Support of the Peace Corps was the biggest to date!  But we are not done yet.  We absolutely need your continued engagement over the next few days as we follow through with key items raised on March 1st.  Such as...

Ask Your Senators to Sign Peace Corps Funding Letter

When Massachusetts RPCVs met on March 1st with Senator Scott Brown, they requested that he sign onto the bi-partisan Feinstein-Isakson letter, which requests strong funding for the Peace Corps in Fiscal Year 2013.

As of Thursday Noon, fourteen Senators signed this letter.  We want to double that, but we need your assistance.

Follow this link to see if your Senators are on board, and take action as needed!

And, that's not all...

Burton meetingAsk Your Rep to Sign House Peace Corps Funding Letter

When staff of Indiana Congressman Dan Burton agreed to meet with NPCA advocates on March 1st, they weren't alone. That was one of nearly 80 meetings held with members of the House of Representatives.

Many of those offices have already responded positively, as 79 Congressmen/women (as of Noon Thursday) are signed on to the Farr-Petri-Honda-Garamendi Dear Colleague letter, requesting $400 Million for the Peace Corps in Fiscal Year 2013.

We want to secure 100 signatures on this letter...or more!

Follow this link and scroll down the page to see if your Congressman/woman is on the House letter, and take action as needed!

But wait, there's more...

Peace Corps Commemorative Continues to Receive Bi-Partisan Support

Here's a question:  What do Senator Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and Congresswoman Nan Hayworth (R-NY) have in common with Congressmen Ron Kind (D-WI), Tim Ryan (D-OH) and Jackie Speier (D-CA)?

All are the latest lawmakers to co-sponsor bi-partisan Peace Corps commemorative legislation.  Nearly 170 Senators and Representatives are now on board as co-sponsors of this legislation.

We're not done yet.  Be looking for more updates in the near future.  In the meantime...

FarrFarr, Others Praise Peace Corps

The first several days of March are often a period when lawmakers take to the House or Senate floor to praise the work of the Peace Corps.

California Featured Advocates:

The Capitol Hill 75!

As so many of you contacted your lawmakers on March 1st, your efforts were bolstered by 75 members of the Peace Corps community who spent the whole day criss-crossing Capitol Hill.

This contingent included some of the very first volunteers to serve in the Peace Corps 51 years ago, and some of the most recent volunteers who returned home 2 - 3 months ago.  There were even a few Peace Corps applicants and invitees involved as well!

Representing twenty states and the District of Columbia, our Capitol Hill advocates also provided the perspectives of volunteers representing every era of Peace Corps service.  They also represented service in fifty nations reaching all corners of the globe. Members of our hard working NPCA Board of Directors were also out in force, with eight Board members participating throughout the day.

Motivated by their passion for public service and their strong belief in the importance of the Peace Corps, we are incredibly grateful to the time and commitment demonstrated by these citizen lobbyists - demonstrated by their preparation in advance of March 1st and their dedication in carrying out the tasks before them on the Day of Action.
Bravo!

We've Moved!

But not too far!  We're in the same building, so the only thing that has changed is our room number.

So, if you are sending us mail, be sure to address it to NPCA, 1900 L Street,
 Suite 610, Washington DC, 20036.

All other contact information remains the same.

Thank You Cards -
With a Peace Corps Touch!

Our Capitol Hill advocates not only held meetings with congressional offices, they followed up with thank you cards to express their appreciation for the time given to discuss Peace Corps issues.

And, these weren't just any old thank you cards.  We were able to use some wonderful blank cards donated to the NPCA by the RPCVs of Wisconsin-Madison, whose well-known international calendar project has surpassed the $1 million mark in charitable donations.

Congratulations to the Madison RPCVs and thanks!
