National Day of Action Three Weeks Away An important reminder that as you mark Peace Corps Day (March 1st) and the anniversary of President Kennedy's Executive Order that created the Peace Corps, please make plans to set aside a few moments on that day to visit the NPCA website and participate in our 8th Annual National Day of Action in Support of the Peace Corps.
We are still accepting registrations for those who want to participate in Day of Action activities on Capitol Hill. Please contact us at advocacy@peacecorpsconnect.org as soon as possible to ensure your participation. We would love to have strong participation of RPCVs coming to town that week to attend the Peace Corps Career Fair. Join dozens of cross-generational members of the Peace Corps community in telling your stories and being a citizen advocate.
Can't Come to Washington but want to provide some additional help from home? No problem! Check out our planning document for some ideas on how you can assist. And be sure to mark your calendar and contact your lawmakers on March 1st. |
President's Peace Corps Funding Request Days Away
By this time next week, we should know the President's Peace Corps funding request for the federal fiscal year that begins this coming October.
President Obama is scheduled to submit his Fiscal Year 2013 budget request to Congress on February 13th.
Recent articles from UPI.com and The Hill newspaper provides an indicator of what may lie ahead. |
Bi-Partisan Support for Peace Corps Commemorative Continues to Grow
Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Congressman David Rivera (R-FL) are two of the most recent members of Congress to co-sponsor legislation that would authorize a commemorative work near the National Mall to mark the lasting historical significance of the founding of the Peace Corps in 1961 and the ideals that Peace Corps service represents.
To date, 165 lawmakers have co-sponsored the Senate or House versions of the legislation. In the House, all four RPCV Congressmen sent a letter to the Natural Resources Committee requesting swift consideration of the legislation (H.R. 854).
Senate legislation (S. 1421) awaits final consideration on the Senate floor.

Oxfam America Action Corps Oxfam America is looking for a few good volunteer leaders.
Oxfam's Action Corps is an exciting grassroots volunteer effort to stand up to poverty, hunger, and injustice around the world. Volunteers who sign-up for the Action Corps by February 14 can apply for Oxfam's free four-day leadership training in Washington D.C. and work on their GROW campaign for food justice.
The Oxfam Action Corps is a group of dedicated volunteers based in more than a dozen US cities who campaign with Oxfam to fight poverty, defend the rights of women, farmers, and protect communities worldwide from rising food prices and climate change. They lead a coordinated charge to improve national legislation and deepen local community resources for fighting poverty and injustice.
Oxfam launched the GROW campaign to build a better food system: one that sustainably feeds a growing population and empowers poor people to earn a living, feed their families, and thrive.
Applications to the Oxfam Action Corps are due February 14, 2012. The all expense training in DC is May 12th - 15th.

50 Years of Peace Corps - The Celebration Continues Even though the anniversary is technically over, The Center for Strategic and International Studies celebrated fifty years of Peace Corps last week with a panel discussion on the successes and challenges facing the agency.
The blue-ribbon panel spoke about the transformative nature of the Peace Corps experience and the important role Peace Corps volunteers continue to play in the world.
The gathering also included an overview of a potentially exciting partnership in volunteerism with another highly developed nation.

Featured Advocate:
Sarah Singletary
Sarah Singletary (Niger/Cameroon 09-11) says it has been her experience that while most people have heard of the Peace Corps, their knowledge of its specifics does not extend very far.
Currently a Fellow at the Partnership for Public Service, Sarah is setting aside Thursday, March 1st to head to Capitol Hill and share some of those specifics with key policymakers.
This is the first time Sarah will be able to participate in our annual National Day of Action, but she has known about the day for years.
And it's how she learned about the day that makes her participation extra special to us.
