Who Are You? We want to connect with our readers, and we want you to connect with us! To try to get to know you better, we'll be adding a mini-survey to upcoming issues of the NPCA E-News. Each survey will be only two or three questions about a specific topic. Participate every month, or just when the topic interests you. We'll publish the results of each mini-survey in the following issue. This month, it's basic demographics. |
Co-Sponsors Climb as Commemorative Heads to Senate Floor
Senators Tim Johnson (D-SD), Chris Coons (D-DE), Mary Landrieu (D-LA) and Johnny Isakson (R-GA) are the latest to announce they will co-sponsor the Peace Corps Commemorative Act (S. 1421), introduced in July by Senator Rob Portman (R-OH). Landrieu announced her intention to co-sponsor the legislation at a November 10th mark-up session before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. The Committee gave unanimous approval to the legislation, which now heads to the full Senate for consideration. Dear Mr. President: As key committees recommend no further reductions in Peace Corps funding, Congress continues to struggle on its Fiscal Year 2012 spending packages. Congress has given final approval to the Kate Puzey Peace Corps Volunteer Protection Act. That legislation should be signed into law in the next ten days. And, as noted elsewhere in this news update, work continues on a Peace Corps commemorative. All of these issues are raised in an end of anniversary year letter to President Obama.

RPCVs Continue their Volunteer Work at Providence House
One of the biggest benefits of Peace Corps service is the continuous inspiration and motivation that Volunteers receive from each other during their time abroad. Annie Mooser and Jean Cassandra were no strangers to the exchange of ideas, the demands of rural living, and the constant push to do better for their communities during their service in Northern Peru from 2005 to 2007. Separated by a bumpy, cliff-hanging 12-hour overnight bus ride, Jean and Annie stayed in touch frequently in Peru via cell phone.
Fast forward. Both their professional paths took them to Providence House, a not-for-profit organization that strives to transform and improve the lives of homeless, abused, and formerly incarcerated women and their children in New York City.... |
