East-West Center Seeking Partners to Advance Green Schools

Posted by request:

The East-West Center - www.eastwestcenter.org - seeks US high school teachers for a global exchange involving their counterparts in Mongolia,  Vietnam, Nepal, and Thailand to advance the concept of "Green School."

Up to eight teachers from each country, including the US, will work with their peers as they share ideas about using new technologies to engage students in thinking and acting sustainably. They will work with their students to create themed projects that promote ways to reduce one's environmental impact in school and beyond the school walls.

Teachers leading the project will receive stipends, and project funds will be available to purchase software or equipment, such as flip-cams, webcams, etc., to support project work. Teachers should be familiar with using new technologies. With funds permitting, the project will launch in fall 2011, and teachers who are effective in engaging and motivating youth will travel to Honolulu for advanced training and exchange.

As we are forming our teacher teams, interested teachers should contact Namji Steinemann - steinemn@eastwestcenter.org - by May 5, 2011.

2011 Dar al Islam Summer Teachers Institute

Posted by request:

This year's Dar al Islam Teachers Institute will be held from July 5 to July 17, 2011.  Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, and we have extended our priority deadline to May 9th.

It is critically important for American educators to have a deep understanding about Islamic history, faith and practice to better teach about Islam and to meet the needs of their Muslim students.

To assist educators in presenting Islam to their students, Dar al Islam annually offers a summer Teachers' Institute.  Classes on Islamic faith, practice, history and culture are taught by university professors and Islamic scholars.  Participants will become more familiar with resources and with ideas for integrating those resources into social studies, religion or world history curriculum.

This program is free of charge, and is held at Dar al Islam's campus, in the breathtaking mountains of Abiquiu, New Mexico, which is one hour north of Santa Fe.

For more information about Dar al Islam and the Teachers Institute, including a full brochure, video, and application, visit us online at www.daralislam.org. If you have any questions, contact Rehana Shafi at InstituteDirector@daralislam.org.
